Awards

Girl Scout Gold Award, Award

Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award that can be achieved by a Girl Scout. In order to earn the award you must complete a service project that directly benefits your local or global community. In this project I address the lack of knowledge of proper hair care and styling among young African-American girls and the esteem issues, societal pressures that come with having curly hair. The goal is to empower youth to take proper care of their hair and therefore improve their overall self-esteem and gain a healthy self-image. We discussed the cultural pressures and identity issues that come with having "black hair" in America. I hope to create a space where women and girls can speak freely about the issues they are going through and in the end take what they have learned about black hair, about themselves and about who they are as a people and pass it on to others.
