UNDERLINED THE VOID

A century-old duplex in Montreal's Mile-end, abandoned for several years, has been extended with a large rooftop apartment and a backyard bedroom wing on each floor.

The project aims to answer the delicate and sensitive question of “architectural intervention on modest heritage. ". How to densify in a gentle way by adding new housing, while retaining the authenticity of the original design and the urban landscape of the street and the lane. How to achieve this in a dialogue between the existing and the new, without one speaking louder than the other, while maintaining the modesty that forms a district of the city.

The answer for the project was to lay a white veil on the existing red brick massif. The new volume contrasts with its lightness, material and color. The addition surprises the attentive passerby with its non-presence/absence, as if the veil framed the void, the pre-existing hollow between the two neighbors of three floors. The simplicity of the new volume creates a backdrop for the figure/form of the existing building that is retained and enhanced. A mezzanine is integrated into the new volume by the slope of the roof. At the rear, the typical L-shape of the buildings of the Plateau Mont-Royal is reconstituted and the aesthetics reviewed. This new wing accommodates the bedrooms of the various accommodations. Given the solar orientation, the courtyard is in the shade for most of the day. The white brick is therefore used to create a second day in the courtyard. The roof is occupied by a roof terrace for the new accommodation in order to take advantage of the beautiful summer days and the view of Mount Royal. The openings of the new rear facade and the materiality clearly asserts itself in the alley while enriching an urban landscape to be rediscovered.

SOULIGNÉ DU VIDE

Un duplex centenaire du Mile-end à Montréal abandonné depuis plusieurs années a été agrandi d’un grand logement en toiture et d’une aile de chambre en cour arrière sur chaque étage.

Le projet vise à répondre à la question délicate et sensible de  «  l’ intervention architecturale sur le patrimoine modeste. ». Comment densifier de manière douce en ajoutant de nouveau logement, tout en conservant l’authenticité du design d’origine et du paysage urbain de la rue et de la ruelle. Comment y parvenir dans un dialogue entre l’existant et le nouveau, sans que l’un parle plus fort que l’autre, en conservant la modestie qui forme un quartier de la ville.

La réponse pour le projet a été de déposer un voile blanc sur le massif de brique rouge existant. Le nouveau volume contraste par sa légèreté, la matière et sa couleur. L’ajout surprend le passant attentif par sa non-présence/ son absence, comme si le voile encadrait le vide, le creux préexistant entre les deux voisins de trois étages. La simplicité du nouveau volume crée un fond pour la figure/ forme du bâtiment existant conservé et mis en valeur. Une mezzanine est intégrée dans le nouveau volume par l’inclinaison de la toiture. À l’arrière, la forme typique en L des bâtiments du Plateau Mont-Royal est reconstituée et l’esthétique revu. Cette nouvelle aile accueille les chambres des différents logements. Vu l’orientation solaire, la cour est dans l’ombre une grande partie de la journée. La brique blanche est donc utilisée afin de créer un second jour dans la cour. La toiture est occupée par une terrasse au toit pour le nouveau logement afin de profiter des belles journées d’été et de la vue vers le Mont-Royal. Les ouvertures de la nouvelle façade arrière et la matérialité s’affirme clairement dans ruelle tout en enrichissant un paysage urbain à redécouvrir.
