oh. that must have been awesome! i just saw death cab for cutie and franz ferdinand. pretty good, although the best concert for me was turin brakes and west indian girl. incredible.

funny how so many of the above mentioned cd's have been on heavy rotation on my ipod as well. i wonder if there is a trend with architecture students and music style?? creepy.

dconscience - love that NIN! I obsessed over that for a long time, still do a bit.

Since last weekend, Johnny Cash, old and new both. By the way, among the "new" stuff he has a NIN cover, Hurt, suits him pretty well.

Also: Esthero, Wicked lil girl (or something like that)

j, I don't know what to tell you. There is so much out there... go explore.

j-

my word of advice:
get a subscription to musicmatch or rhapsody. it costs less than the price of a cd, and gives you the opportunity to try out something different without the commitment of purchasing a cd you know nothing about.

given what you have listed i would check out:

the shins-both albums
patrick park-loneliness knows my name
the john butler trio
the white stripes-the early stuff
and of course, my favorite
turin brakes-anything!

'i suppose i'll also have to start wearing all black, smoking, and being generally jaded...'

err....no. people who like obscure music are a breed of their own, it has more to do with having become addicted or obsessed with music for some personal reason.
i think with me seeing sonic youth's kool thing video when i was 10 and being totally shocked+amazed+scared that music could be that way was what intiated my tastes hence forth + i derive pleasure from messy, more disharmonious sights and sounds over harmonious, clean, picture perfect ones.

in saying that, i've been listening to Glenn Branca and Swans lately, two groups related to sonic youth.

and i can understand why you don't like modest mouse, i never liked them as well, i can't stand that guys singing style, and steve malkmus was in his prime in early pavement, although i can understand why you wouldn't like them either.

Hmmm, let's see what iTunes says I'm listening to most...

Kayne West
Clap Your Hands & Say Yeah
Louis XIV
Tegan and Sara
Wilco-A.M. & Summer Teeth
Andrew Bird
Art Brut
Handsome Boy Modeling School
Shrift

Also like the new Belle & Sebastian, guess I have to listen to it a few dozen more times.

I've also gone back and checked out some older British invasion stuff, Kink's Village Green Society and The Who's A Quick One (Happy Jack.) Kind of in part due to all the ads using their brilliant songs, whatever happened to , "Hope I die before I get sold?" Ah well, if they didn't sell out then I never would have discovered them.

i just started participating in a loosely structured cd 'club'. there are 11 of us. i know two of the others, but most don't really know each other much.

we take turns making cds for each other - an update of mix tapes more or less - so that we can introduce each other to new stuff, old stuff, things we may have missed.

i've received three discs so far and, though i know much of music, i didn't have a lot of it and the mix and the new spin on putting it together has been fun. everyone seems to be deciding on themes for deciding what to include. so far: old school rap, a historic survey of 20C popular music (i.e., the impt folks), and all covers).

after we get a cd we end up discussing it and the associations it triggers via email for a couple of days.

geeky but grand.

highlights so far:
-paul pena's original version of 'jet airliner'
-the gourds bluegrass version of snoop dogg's 'gin and juice'
-live dylan 'leopard skin pill box hat' from royal albert hall bootleg (not really recorded at royal albert hall)
-ice t's 'high rollers'
-buddy holly 'well alright'
-t rex 'mambo sun'

CD? What's that?

My Soundock is rocking out to The Strokes...god, I must have missed the "this band kicks @ss" memo, lol....

When my roommates left for spring break I kinda "borrowed" their cd collections and uploaded their music to my ipod so now I get to discover all of the awesome non-commercial released songs on albums where I only know a few of the more popular songs

vado-
Seems like there are always a couple bands that someone is heralding as the "new British Invasion." And I've never been entirely clear on what qualifies as brit invasion and what doesn't. Was it the early period when everyone looked like Gerry or does the later more psychedelic stuff by the same groups still qualify?
