Anyone know the name of the urbanist/planner who created a greenspace proposal for Los Angeles during the mid-century. It was a drawing of parks distributed throughout los angeles and were all linked together..
need to figure out his name so i can find his drawing/diagram.. thanks
[url=http://www.cityprojectca.org/ourwork/olmsted.html]Frederick Law Olmsted?[/url} Of course you could mean a different one, but when in doubt it seems that Olmsted had a plan for everywhere.
Of the LA greenspace plans that are especially well known, none of them are really mid-century, but most of these will lead to some nice diagrams:
> Charles Mulford Robinson, "City Beautiful" 1907 (http://www.ulwaf.com/LA-1900s/07.12.html)
> Olmsted Bros & Bartholomew, "Parks and Playgrounds" 1930 (http://www.ucpress.edu/books/pages/8995/8995.report.php)
> EDAW, "Urban Metropolitan Open Space for California" 1969 (www.asla.org/uploadedFiles/EDAW_Articles_Photos.pdf)
> City of Los Angeles Planning Dept, "Centers Plan" 1970 (http://www.planetizen.com/node/23535)
> Johnson Fain, "Los Angeles Greenways Study" 1993 (http://www.johnsonfain.com/urban/41)
I've heard that Kevin Lynch did a plan for LA in the mid 60s (similar to his "Temporary Paradise" plan for San Diego, but I've never seen it. Maybe "citizen" can help out...
Alan's got all of the one's listed that I know of, including one (EDAW) that I did not.
As far as I know about Lynch, he was hired as a consultant by the City of Los Angeles in the '70s to do a visual/landscape study of the place (a typical type of planning document back then). It's available at the city archive, and occasionally you'll find one in a library.
