I'm starting a little record label out of Atlanta. I plan on six releases a year (3 releases on 2 seperate occasions) and already have the first two done. I need to send stuff to get pressed soon and have no name. I need to make a website, but have no name. Does anyone have any suggestions?
it will typically be indie rock. but all styles of it.
as for what kind of label....im not too sure...its really a hobby for me, something to spend my money on (I won't make anything). so, i want to do something good for atlanta music, help bands put out stuff and just kinda group it all under this name as something that could maybe unify the music scene.
Well, long ago, when I thought I would get good at the guitar, I thought I'd name my surf punk band Pulling OJ on the suggestion of a friend. I have no idea what it means but it was during the OJ Simpson trials. So, there you go, there's my suggestion: Pulling OJ Records
On a similar vein, I once overheard somebody saying that they wanted to name their band "Spinning Calamari." Spinning Calamari Records? Basically, the key is: verb + food = label name. Hope this helps.
I love this game. I've spent many hours thinking about what I'd name my band/album title/record label. This decision can make or break your label, so think long and hard about it.
A few that I like:
Metes and Bounds.
Rescue the Satelites.
Start the New Transmission.
Are you receiving me?
Records
yes, I'm a promise ring fan. I'm happy to see that someone caught the reference.
I'm particularly fond of using song lyrics for your label or band name, as in Texas is the Reason. They are not only a great band, but also a band with a great name taken from the lyrics of Misfits song "bullet."
Some (most) of these are real cheesy, but I'm trying to reference Georgia and/or Atlanta:
Vidalia Records (I actually like this for some reason)
Sprawl Records (Sprawl is cool because it's a reference to an Atlanta's urban condition, but also a reference to The Sprawl, which is William Gibsons vision of the east coast as one vast megalopolis from Boston to Atlanta http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sprawl .. too bad you're not in Alabama)
Peach ... no.
Boiled Peanuts ... okay forget it.
What's the thing they say in the South for tea without sugar, is it just "unsweet?" ... so ... Unsweet Records
Song lyric:
"I-hope-you-know-that-this-will-go-down-on-your-permanent" Records
Or how about, Pop! Pop! Records. random. ... RANDOM RECORDS

thanks for all the advice, i considered some of them, and enjoyed laughing at the others. unfortunately i couldnt come up with something i really liked so i kind of defaulted to 'rob's house records', a name that my band had made up as a fake record label for our first 7" release. we were all moving around at the time and used a friends (named rob) house as a permanant address and the name just kinda made since. that was two years ago so the name has kind of found a place in my heart. by using this name i also already have one release. and its kind of like making a joke a reality.
help me name a record label

courtesy of my 7 yo nephew who was in town last night, here's a great phrase that could also make an interesting record label name:
"long sleeved pants"
ahmet says "atalantic" is ok, if the music is good.
Structured Records
I thought the 'go disc' and its graphic label was good - but then again I thought the housemartins were a good group as welllllll
