KAAN Architecten has won the commission to design the new terminal at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, beating out major competitors OMA, UNStudio, SOM, and MVRDV. In the years ahead, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol will be expanding in order to strengthen the competitive position of Mainport Schiphol, keep pace with growth in aviation and continue their title of 'Europe's preferred airport' among both airlines and passengers.
The welcoming and timeless design will greet 14 million passengers per year and is planned to link up with Schiphol Plaza, the train station and potential future expansions. The Rotterdam-based firm will partner with Estudio Lamela, ABT and Ineco—with the support of Arnout Meijer Studio, DGMR and Planeground—to carry out the design for the new 100,500 m2 terminal that will allow for all facilities to be under one roof, with overhangs and black eaves.
