'Capital Brutalism' takes over the National Building Museum this June

The next exhibition held at the National Building Museum in Washington will tell the story of D.C.’s Brutalist architecture and its role in reshaping the city after mid-century.

Organized in collaboration with the Southern Utah Museum of Art, the exhibition features several imaginative re-designs from high-profile firms that posit future adaptations for seven public buildings that have become catalysts for debate. Studio Gang, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Brooks + Scarpa, and Gensler are among the firms whose conceptual designs are included. Noted architectural photographer Ty Cole is a co-curator along with University of Oklahoma associate professor Dr. Angela Person.

Capital Brutalism opens on June 1st. It can be viewed alongside the current Frank Lloyd Wright's Southwestern Pennsylvania exhibition, which opened last month and will remain on view until March 17th of next year.

Arup Hong Kong employee targeted in $25 million deepfake scam

British multinational design and engineering company behind world-famous buildings such as the Sydney Opera House has confirmed that it was the target of a deepfake scam that led to one of its Hong Kong employees paying out $25 million to fraudsters. A spokesperson for London-based Arup told CNN on Friday that it notified Hong Kong police in January about the fraud incident, and confirmed that fake voices and images were used.

“Our financial stability and business operations were not affected and none of our internal systems were compromised,” an Arup spokesperson told CNN. The employee in question was apparently misled into believing they were in a video conference with senior finance staffers that were in reality deepfaked impersonations.

Deepfake attacks on business have been on the rise international for several months as the technological sophistication of audi-visual mimicry continues a rapid development.

Arup currently has 34 offices worldwide.

BIG's NOT A HOTEL Setouchi weds Danish and Japanese design

BIG has designed a new remote hotel concept on Sagi Island, Japan, for the NOT A HOTEL brand, its sixth property overall. The new Setouchi project follows other hospitality designs from the firm, including the new Hôtel des Horlogers in Switzerland and Vollebak Island in Canada.

A ribbon-like footpath stitches together the mossy archipelago’s natural landscape with the residential portion of the design. Three villas (‘360,’ ‘270,’ and ‘180’) form a sequence staggered at different elevations on the approximately 323,000-square-foot site overlooking the southwestern cape of Sagi Island. Each features its own unique characteristics and corresponding panoramic views of the sea and inner harbor area, with accommodations that vary between three and four bedrooms.

Ayers Saint Gross has shared renderings of its new design in Charlotte, North Carolina, ahead of its opening in 2025. Dubbed 'The Pearl,' the scheme is a 3 million-square-foot mixed-use innovation district intended to aid the Wake Forest School of Medicine's expansion and mission to become a new civic hub for around a million Charlotteans.

The new apart-hotel in the Fòrum area of Barcelona, TEMBO BCN Suites, is the building resulting from the international invitation competition convened by Stahler Real State Group, a competition won by the team formed by the architectural studios, HYBRIDa /aZCON in 2017. In the competition rules, it was imposed that in an already advanced phase of the project developmed by HYBRIDa /aZCON, the architecture studio D388 would be incorporated as a partner dedicated more to a construction phase. The architecture of the project is defined by HYBRIDa /aZCON in the competition, in the preliminary project, and in the basic project. The property wanted to fully develop the winning proposal of the competition for its architectural uniqueness. Therefore, the executive project is developed with absolute fidelity to the winning proposal, and with a lot of detail, to absolutely define the architecture in its construction.

The MK House is located in an area of the island of Mallorca that is still relatively uninhabited and undeveloped by tourism. Geographically, it is bounded to the north by the coastal area, open to the Tramuntana mountain range, and to the south by a mountain chain that gradually closes off the area until reaching the sea. Between these boundaries, a plain encompasses the built-up and agricultural areas.

In the approximate center of the plain, a farming settlement was established in the mid-19th century, based on a clear regular grid layout. This grid serves as the framework for our intervention. A standard plot measures 10 by 30 meters between party walls. Therefore, it is a small piece to be added to the urban ensemble.

Designing for the invisible: New exhibition centers on the experience of homelessness for architects and urban designers

The UQAM Design Centre at the University of Quebec in Montreal will be hosting a new exhibition, (IN)VISIBLE: Design through the Prism of Homelessness, that offers insights for designers looking towards solutions for how to make the crisis of homelessness currently gripping many Western democracies more visible.

The exhibition is being presented in unison with the group Architecture Without Borders Quebec (ASFQ), which has been an advocate of different at-risk communities throughout the province and abroad.

Herzog & de Meuron's FORUM UZH design moves forward in Zurich

Herzog & de Meuron is advancing on the construction of its new FORUM UZH design at the University of Zurich following a permit issuance for the project whose bid was born out of a 2018 international competition.

Preparatory site work will begin in August for the new building, which replaces former gymnasium structures with a facility for research and education at a capacity of 6,000 people. Included in its program are over 700 individual workspaces, a central library, seminar rooms, and sports halls.

This is their first design for the university. The firm also recently broke ground on another academic building project, the new UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital at the University of San Francisco, a 15-story hybrid healthcare facility and academic medical complex that is expected to be completed in 2030.

New York City has broken ground on the important new Battery Coastal Resilience project in Lower Manhattan. The critical $200 million component of the city’s larger Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency strategy is meant to protect 12,000 businesses and about 100,000 New Yorkers. It has been developed in unison with the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice.

The UK’s Loughborough University has accepted Thomas Heatherwick's challenge to ‘humanize’ and create ‘joyful’ architecture with a new academic offering: A master's degree aiming to give students the opportunity to take part in a burgeoning movement created to solve a global “urban crisis” over the next decade. The 115-year-old university will become the first to affiliate itself with the Humanise campaign academically with new supplementary course content exclusive to its new Master of Architecture & Design program.

Converted grain silo opens as new art destination in southern Norway

Norway’s new Kunstsilo Museum has opened to the public in the southern port city of Kristiansand.

The new home for the private collection of Nicolai Tangen is the product of a six-year transformation authored by Spanish studios Mestres Wåge Arquitectes, Mendoza Partida, and BAX in a former grain silo (hence the name) and integrates the Southern Norway Art Museum’s holdings seamlessly into one space that covers three floors and yields a total of 3,300 square meters (35,520 square feet) for exhibitions and cultural programming.

The Sou Fujimoto-designed wooden Grand Ring roof for the upcoming Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, is coming together just under a year before the fair officially opens to the public on April 13th, 2025.

Much though the school’s director Penny Macbeth insists that “our commitment is not diminished in any way shape or form”, an implication of their current approach is that the building’s renewal has to be justified in terms of regeneration and tourism. It seems to reopen the question whether the rebuild should happen at all. Lacking here is a conviction that the building must be brought back, whether or not it’s good for business on Sauchiehall Street.

Moore also claims “the responsibility to bring back a national treasure should not be theirs alone” (meaning the school’s) in support of his view that setting up an SPV for development would be, for now, the best way to go in order to meet the original promises issued in 2018.

This new 4-story, ground-up building is a 3-unit multi-family condominium building located on Chestnut Street in the Marina district of San Francisco.

The four-story building relates in scale to the existing context of the neighborhood but is set in contrast with the prevailing Marina style buildings common in the area. Designed with contemporary detailing in mind, the front facade consists of cement board panel rain screen cladding and floor-to-ceiling operable glass windows and doors to allow for ample light and ventilation to the residential units above.

With ample glazing, the interior units are bathed in light and have a refined material pallet of white walls, wide-plank oak flooring and natural stone throughout the bathrooms. Lloyd Wright's historic closed Wayfarers Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, will be disassembled in the face of irreparable landslide damage, the group responsible for its stewardship announced via a press release Tuesday.

Architectural Resources Group will handle the disassembly work with great care, as the LA Times and other outlets have reported its structure is rapidly deteriorating from the movement underneath its foundation, which is now occurring at rates 2–3 times more severe than was recorded back in February.

The firm's principal, Katie Horak, told the outlet: "With each passing day, more of this material is lost or irreparably damaged. Our team is working against the clock to document and move these building components to safety so that they can be put back together again."
