The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has issued a new report detailing a troubling new phenomenon affecting small office practitioners in the UK.

The Architects’ Journal has details on some of the newfound challenges for design contracts from those not included on the UK’s official register and licensed architects who are reeling in a business climate beset by increased competition on the part of their non-professionalized rivals and a dual culture of “constant undercutting” for fees from better-positioned large firms.

AIA survey shows impact of pandemic and climate on client design requests

The AIA has released the latest edition of its Home Design Trends Survey, covering the category of “home features.” The report found that quarantines, working from home, and climate change are among the factors contributing to changing home design trends. Among the key findings from the report were an uptick in demand for outdoor living space, multiple home offices, and exercise space, and features such as solar panels, backup power generators, and hurricane-resistant design.

The demand for outdoor living spaces continues to grow, with a 70% increase in popularity compared to 2020. Home office popularity increased 69%, while a demand for multiple offices or spaces for virtual meetings increased 48%. There was also a 39% increase in demand for exercise rooms/yoga spaces. Over half of respondents noted either outdoor living spaces or home offices as being the most popular special function room demanded by clients.

U.S. residential construction is accelerating, but not all regions are feeling it

Residential construction in the United States is accelerating, despite the high costs of materials caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to new data released by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Within their report, which focuses on new residential construction in June 2021, the government bodies noted that housing permit authorizations, housing starts, housing under construction, and housing units completed, are all significantly higher than June 2020.

The report notes that last month, almost 1.6 million housing units were authorized with permits, marking a 5% decrease on the month previous, but a 23% increase on the number of permits issued in June 2020. Meanwhile, over 1.64 million housing units started the construction process last month, an increase of 6% from May, and a 29% increase on June 2020.

Demand for larger homes increased for first time in 5 years, says AIA survey

Client interest in larger homes has increased over the past 12 months for the first time in five years, according to the newly published Home Design Trends Survey carried out by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The survey results, free to view here, also note a sharp rise in demand for rental units and accessory dwelling units (independent dwellings located on the same lot as an existing dwelling).

Other notable trends include a significant increase in demand for the finishing of unfinished spaces such as basements, attics, and garages, and a dramatic increase in the popularity of outbuildings such as sheds, barns, and pool houses.

AIA report examines impact of COVID-19 on architecture business conditions

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has partnered with Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope in releasing a new report titled Business Opportunities & Sustainability Trends Amidst a Pandemic, studying the impact of COVID-19 on design firm business conditions. The report, which is freely available via the AIA website, was commissioned to understand the impact of the pandemic on business conditions, and also help firms identify new business opportunities.

The study found that although demands for design services and construction activity decreased significantly during the pandemic, other design and construction sectors created positive business conditions for architects with aligned design focuses. For example, while the impact on commercial and institutional projects was particularly negative, the demand for architectural services on single-family homes increased. American Library Association and Google partner to develop "library entrepreneurship centers"

The (ALA) has named 13 libraries that were selected to receive a total of $1.3 million to develop their library entrepreneurship centers. Part of Libraries Build Business, an initiative established by Google.org to enable libraries across the country to increase the number of business creators they serve from low-income and underrepresented backgrounds. The program aims to provide services to 15,000 people over the course of 18 months.

"Libraries Build Business showcases libraries’ role as catalysts for equitable opportunity, just when it’s needed most," said ALA President Julius Jefferson in a statement. During the economic downturn the pandemic has forced upon many professionals, architecture firms seem to be focusing on improving their PR, marketing, and external communications. It's a coherent move. On the one hand, business owners do well to focus on communication strategies during this time to win new work during a time when new projects in some sectors may not be as abundant and to stay relevant. But, on the other hand, a refocus now positions firms for capitalization when things pick back up.

AEC survey shows uneven economic decline within construction industry

Piggybacking on recent data specific to the architecture industry, a new Quarterly Market Forecast from business consultant group PSMJ Resources indicates that current and near-term construction activity has steeply fallen off in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like recent findings published by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Architecture Billings Index (ABI) report for April, PSMJ finds that demand for construction activity has fallen in nearly all the industry sectors it measures, with commercial development impacted the most.

Also like the ABI, PSMJ's survey has registered historically low economic conditions. The survey, according to PSMJ, consists of "193 responses from the consistent group of hundreds of A/E/C firm leaders who regularly complete the quarterly survey."
