Raoul Wallenberg Lecture: f-architecture

Tue, Feb 2 '21
Ann Arbor, MI, US

The annual Raoul Wallenberg Lecture was initiated in 1971 by Sol King, a former classmate of Wallenberg's. An endowment was established in 1976 for an annual lecture to be offered in Raoul's honor on the theme of architecture as a humane social art. The 2021 Raoul Wallenberg Lecture will be delivered by f-architecture.

feminist architecture collaborative (f-architecture) is a three-woman* architectural research enterprise aimed at disentangling the contemporary spatial politics of bodies, intimately and globally. Their projects traverse theoretical and material registers to locate new forms of architectural work through critical relationships with collaborators across continents and an expanding definition of Designer. They think, write, and design about blood, teenage dreaming, sovereignty, fakeness, and protest—among other supposedly extra-disciplinary fixations.

f-architecture is a winner of the 2019 Architectural League Prize. Como-Clinical Interiors of Beirut, their exhibition on the architectural reproduction of virginity in the Lebanese capital, opened at  VI PER Gallery in Prague in 2018 and has been re-staged by the Architectural League of New York, and at the NTU Institute of Science and Technology for Humanity in Singapore, where they were shortlisted for the 2019 Global Digital Art Prize. In January 2020, they were Artists-in-Residence at The Lab at Darat al Funun in Amman, Jordan, during which time they produced the exhibition Paper Machine (آلات ورقية). Their writing and work have appeared in Harvard Design Magazinee-flux architectureThe FunambulistReal Review and Log, among other publications, and at institutions including Morgan Library and Museum, Studio-X Amman, Universität der Künste Berlin, FRAC Centre-Val de Loire, and UN-Habitat. f-architecture is a former member of the GSAPP Incubator @ NEW INC, the incubator initiative of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.

*Virginia Black, Rosana Elkhatib, and Gabrielle Printz co-founded f-architecture in 2016. They maintain their wily practice and their deep friendship in Brooklyn, New York.
