One of Houston’s few bayous that escaped channelization and concretization by the Army of Corps of Engineers, Buffalo Bayou also presents one of the most critical green spaces for the city. It still retains its riparian ecosystem, traversing major parts of the city and connecting neighborhoods to downtown and out to the Houston Ship Channel.
Hardening of the watershed through urbanization over the last century has greatly increased flood hazards throughout the city, and lack of connectivity with its context causes the bayou to be an underutilized cultural resource. The project extends the half-mile Bagby-to-Sabine promenade an additional two miles to Shepherd Drive, provides trails and park space, and considers the fluvial geomorphology of the bayou to work with the persistent flooding endemic to the area.
