Shevaun Mistry

Whitby, ON, CA

My name is Shevaun Mistry and I am currently enrolled in Year 3 of the Bachelor of Architecture program at the University of Waterloo. I am interested in applying for a work position at your firm, and was wondering if there were any open positions.

After browsing your company website I have noticed that your projects reflect a varied list and appeal to a large range of clients from residential, educational, institutional, to recreational. It is my goal to work with such a diverse company where I can gain a deeper understanding of the concepts I am currently learning. I would like to improve my skills I have gained from being in my program while observing the inner workings of a firm.

I have a basic knowledge of how buildings work form my Building Construction courses, Principles of Structures course, and Timber construction course. Environmental Building Design, Cultural History, and Acoustics and Lighting are other courses I have taken that have helped me understand and grasp the concept of other features found in buildings and how they function overall to create different environments. Visual Communications has bettered my hand drafting skills as well as taught me to work electronically with programs such as Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino, V-ray, and AutoCAD. All of these concepts I have learnt have been brought together in Studio where I work hands-on to design and build things such as artist residences, archives, and hotels. Studio not only gives me a creative outlet to express myself, but also assists me in understanding spatial concepts.

My commitment to hard work has been demonstrated throughout high school and university. I attended Trinity College School for my high school education, and accelerated my high school credits by doing summer school abroad, which allowed me to complete 4 advanced placement courses in my senior year. I was also an active member of Big Sisters, the Social Justice Club, Environmental Club, and Jamaican Self-Help where I traveled abroad to work with underprivileged and disabled children. While doing these activities, I also participated in competitive sports such as rowing, Nordic skiing, soccer, and competitive dance. Having completed the Canadian Dance Teachers Association syllabus in ballet, tap, acrobatics, and jazz allowed my to assist as a dance teacher at school for the Dance Troupe program and teach students of all ages at 2 different dance studios. This work ethic has carried through university and during the summer I was able to volunteer at Q-Vision Studios, which is a photography and graphic design company, the Humane Society, and the dance studio. I also made time to give back to my high school by volunteering as an alumni speaker and helping perspective university students.

Over the past four months during the fall term I worked in Cape Town, South Africa at an environmental firm called EcoDesign Architects and Consultants. This firm not only specialized in creating environmental buildings with safe non-hazardous products, but also believed in educating locals about building environmentally friendly by hosting workshops and creating e-manuals to show people how to build with local products. EcoDesign also dabbles in industrial design by building thing such as lamps, chairs, desks, and other products out of recycled materials. They have done a few urban planning projects including the most recent OR Tambo Environmental Center in Johannesburg, which I was fortunate enough to work next to the head architect of EcoDesign on and create the information manual, which touched on materials being used in each building, solutions to building problems, and water filtration systems used throughout the site. I was also able to go to local site visits and talk to clients and the structural engineers on the progress of the projects, which I drafted AutoCAD plans and details for.

I believe I would be an asset to your firm through my hard work and enthusiasm. Attached is a copy of my resume for you to review. I am currently updating my portfolio and can send you a copy if you would like to review my work. I hope to schedule an interview at a mutually convenient time at which time I can present and discuss my portfolio. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at anytime. I look forward to speaking with you, and hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you for your consideration.

Kind regards,
Shevaun Mistry
