Conventional construction methods all depart from the basic premises of mass production: standardization, modulation and a production line. What these systems developed during the last two centuries fail to take into account are the evolutionary leaps and bounds the manufacturing industry has taken over the last decades. With the introduction of CNC technologies and rapid prototyping machines have altered the paradigms of fabrication forever. It is due to these new tools that it is now possible to create (n) amount of completely unique and different pieces with the same amount of energy and material that is required to create (n) identical pieces. The possibilities for implementation of new forms, textures, materials and languages are infinite due to the versatility that these new tools offer a growing network of architects, designers, fabricators that are integrating them into their professional practices to generate unique and precise objects that respond to countless data and real-life conditions.

Instructors:
Monika Wittig, Andrea Graziano [ LaN, IaaC, Co-de-it ]
MS Josh Updyke [ Advanced Manufacturing Institute, KSU, Protei ]
Aaron Gutiérrez Cortes [ Amorphica ]

Guest Lecturers: [ 20 Hours ]
The premise of having guest lecturers is to expose participants to a wide variety of viewpoints from individuals and companies that play key protagonist roles  in the intellectual development of the digital fabrication field. These lectures will be imparted via interactive video conferencing lectures and physical interventions. Come back soon for more information.

Confirmed Lecturers include: Cesar Harada, Diana Quintero Saul, Joshua Zabel, Alberto Hernandez, Aaron Onchi, Alejando Candela

Workshop Dates:
Ensenada, Baja California
Workshop 1: Digital Fabrication Implementation [March 8-10 & 15-17 2012]
Workshop 2: Design of Digital Fabrication Tools [April 19-21 & 26-28 2012]
Workshop 3: Information based design and real scale fabrication [May 24-26 & 31, June 1-2 & 8-9 2012 ]

Workshop 1: Digital Fabrication Implementation
Monika Wittig //Andrea Graziano
[48 studio hours]
Being able to use digital design tools that aid in digital fabrication and rapid prototyping is a key skill in the successful design and realization of provocations that are responsive to a plethora of information layers which is why during this intensive workshop we will learn the basic operation principles of Rhinoceros 3D, Rhino CAM and other useful plugins like Grasshopper and Kangaroo that are helpful in the design and development of generative systems. We will also experiment interoperability modes with other 3D design tools into our CNC mill and/or 3D printer.

Workshop 2: Design of Digital Fabrication Tools
Josh Updyke
[48 studio hours ]
Being able to understand and alter the inner workings and systems of a fabrication machine is invaluable piece of knowledge when designing objects that are to be fabricated on an exact and precise manner by our own tools. This is why during this first workshop we will build a CNC fabrication robot with an approximate range of movement along XYZ of approximately 48”x48”x8” [121.92cm x 121.92cm x 15.24cm] and a 1/100” [0.254mm.] precision. Also, should there be more than 40 workshop participants we will also build an additive manufacturing type machine such as a Rep-Rap or similar design with a printing surface of approximately [100mm x 100mm x 130mm] and a 20 micron resolution along XY and 5 microns on Z and capable of prototyping in ABS and PLA plastics as well as other experimental materials such as clay, chocolate, wax, dough, etc.
In addition to building these CNC tools with an adaptable and repeatable open-source design, students will have the opportunity to purchase a kit to build a personal sized fabrication robot with an approximate range of movement of [100mm x 100mm x 75mm]. This means we will create a 3D printer able of creating and replicating objects designed in 3D platforms [Maya, 3D Studio, Cinema 4D, Sketch Up, Blender, Rhino/Grasshopper/Kangaroo, etc.]

Workshop 3: Emergent_CIA: Provocaciones Urbanas
Aaron Gutiérrez Cortes // Amorphica
[64 studio hours]
The purpose of this workshop is to design and build urban provocations in a dynamic context of abandoned spaces sprinkled throughout downtown. It is through a process of architectural interventions that could be located in key parts of this semi-dense and active place, functioning at all hours of the day and most of the night. This exercise will aim at creating a desperately needed emergent order that positively affects the urban and social quality of life that currently occurs.  These ideas demand new valuation methods, the possibilities are endless in a world of incredible movement that exists not only in the downtown of Ensenada but also on the virtual world in the minds of the society that transits, uses and lives it.
This architectural and urban movement is based upon the regeneration of spaces that flow with constant and ever-changing activity. A space in this transition of possibilities is based not only on the mixed use that is quite obvious and necessary in an urban context such as this, but on the countless opportunities that are offered by a space that is able to house X activities, seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day.
Research and documentation will be elemental to a complete and successful project. It is imperative that we are aware that research and documentation will be carried all throughout the workshop. This exercise aims to produce results that present a profound integration between the street, the sidewalk, the entrance and the spaces within these provocations. Students will be able to work individually or on teams and the collective result of all projects will work in a swarm to affect in a positive manner the whole area of study. During this workshop we will fabricate 1:1 models and prototypes in low cost materials and/or sponsored by workshop partners.
