Patrik Schumacher
Partner, Zaha Hadid Architects, London

Patrik Schumacher joined Zaha Hadid Architects in 1988 and has been the co-author of many key projects, a.o. MAXXI – the National Italian Museum for Art and Architecture of the 21st Century. Together with Zaha Hadid he has built up Zaha Hadid Architects to become a 400 person strong global architecture brand. Patrik Schumacher studied philosophy, mathematics, and architecture in Bonn, London and Stuttgart. He completed his PhD at the Institute for Cultural Science, Klagenfurt University.  Since 1996 he has taught at the AA Design Research Laboratory. In 2010 and 2012 he published the two Volumes of The Autopoiesis of Architecture.

Mr. Schumacher’s lecture will address Organization Articulation Signification. Architecture is Communication. The intensification of communication constitutes the essential, contemporary form of cultural advancement. The furthering of this vital capacity requires a new built environment with an unprecedented level of complexity, organized and articulated into a rich, variegated order of the kind we admire in natural, self-organized systems. It has now become both possible to enhance architecture’s capacity to organize and articulate the increasing complexity of post-fordist network society through the re-foundation of architectural semiology under the auspices of parametricism.
