The Daniels Faculty is pleased to welcome urban designer William Morrish — Dean of the School of Constructed Environments at Parsons The New School for Design in New York — to present the next lecture in its 2011-2012 public Lecture Series.

Morrish is committed to examining the social implications of design. Conducting interdisciplinary research, collaborating with citizens and civic leaders, and forging connections between the infrastructure, culture, and ecology of urban environments is key to his work.
Drawing from the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, planning, and architectural history, Morrish’s research focuses on urban housing and infrastructure, human settlement and community design, and educational programs that explore integrated design. His ideas and findings have been applied to a wide range of innovative community-based city projects, including Phoenix Public Art Works program, team THINK’s proposal for rebuilding the World Trade Center, and design assistance in efforts for rebuilding New Orleans.
Morrish was the previous Elwood R. Quesada Chair in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Planning at the University of Virginia, where he taught and led research on sustainable urban infrastructure, new housing models, and global urbanization and climate change. Prior to joining Parsons, he worked with The New School to complete a comprehensive review of the United Nations Habitat for Human Settlements Program’s global work plan. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Morrish is the author of Civilizing Terrains, and co-author of the books Building for the Arts, Planning To Stay, and Growing Urban Habitats.
Morrish is the Daniels Faculty’s 2012 Michael Hough/Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) Visiting Critic in Landscape Architecture. This endowed position was established by the OALA and professional communities to bring an international figure in contemporary urban landscape architecture to the Faculty annually. In addition to delivering a public lecture, Morrish will review design projects of students in the Masters of Landscape Architecutre program.
