In its 2012 October edition, The Architectural Review published Alternative Routes for Architecture, an article discussing some of the challenges facing British architectural education. In order to find some possible answers, a think-tank was launched under the same banner – abbreviated to ARFA. After a year of exploring different educational models, ARFA has launched the London School of Architecture (LSA).
The LSA will offer an alternative Part 2 route into the profession for talented and self-motivated Part 1 graduates. We are seeking ARB accreditation for the programme, and will make a full submission to the body in 2014, with the first intake of students scheduled for the following year. Students will enter into a challenging educational environment, spending their first year in a practice placement and their second year undertaking self-directed projects in the capital city. By being an orchestrated network instead a fixed hierarchy, we will keep the school nimble, open and responsive. Through the delivery of this programme, the LSA aims to establish itself as a leading inter-generational community of architectural practitioners engaged in innovative design and critical research.
