ARC 605 - A studio in the Material Culture Research Trajectory this work explores a new set of criteria for building foundations. Typically thought of as the most stable element of construction, the “foundation”, is a massive subterranean concrete structure that bears little presence to the function or program of the structure. What if our perceived notion of the “foundation” is altered so that it becomes an active element in providing environmental conditions that are conducive for habitation?

In this proposal a steel mega-structure extends over the entire boundary of the urban site. A multi-layered curved panel structural system facilitates a series of conditions in respect to sunlight, wind, and precipitation. Platforms are suspended from the steel structure which encapsulate specific building program that require specific environmental needs. The structural system maintains longevity through a flexible framework which provides suitable conditions for multiple building functions.
