IIT: CHANGING NATURE Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL
This project studied single tree species (Robinia pseudoacacia, Black Locust), and to utilize 9 specimens in a design on the Illinois Institute of Technology’s campus, a Mies van der Rohe modernist plan with a landscape design by Alfred Caldwell.
Black Locust, although native to the Illinois region, grows rhizomatously and forms a monoculture thicket. It is usually avoided in landscape design because of this, so this inherently required some type of maintenance plan to be built into the design.
