Adaptive Re-use Culinary School

This project, designed in the spring of 2010, is an adaptive-reuse project located off of the Huron River in Ypsilanti, MI where the Peninsular Paper Company was located. The objective was to use the hollow shell that is the existing building and breathe new life into it in the form of a culinary school. My design intent was to attract people into the existing structure using pathways that extend into every part of the site. These pathways converge at the entrance to the building and guide those who enter either to the educational wing of the building or to the “glass-box” restaurant that is cantilevered over the Huron River. An interior skin creates the interior partitions and also wraps the exterior of the restaurant.
