Carmelite Sisters Convent

This design project was conceived from two stages.  The first stage was the development of a small cell with a rhomboid shape as a floor plant with limited and restricted dimensions and specific places for storage, sleep and pray.  One corner was designated for the prayers. A narrow skylight on the ceiling and down to the corner will frame and emphasized the area with natural light.  The shape of each cell set the base for the second stage of this design project, giving the convent complex a rhomboid shape as well.  Consistently with the design of the individual cell one of the corners of the complex will serve as the chapel and spiritual retreat for the group.

Concept;

Materiality and lighting play an important and relevant place in the development of the convent complex.  Exposed concrete is the principal construction material for the complex giving it a sense of austerity and sobriety that reflect the humbleness character of this specific religious order.  Natural lighting penetrates the structure directly and indirectly. Indirect natural lighting is reserved for places of prayers and reflection, while direct natural light is used to emphasize work places and focal points.
