About

Hello,

I’m Caterina Gallizioli, architect licensed in Italy, and I just handed in my PhD thesis in Interior Architecture and Design at Politecnico di Milano (with the title: Inhabiting between public space and water. Urban and Landscape Interior of the contemporary city. Villoresi Canal as opportunity for a new identity). Last year I spent some time as Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and now I’m back in NY to look for job opportunities and internships. Having the opportunity to work at your firm would be a great and formative experience for me.

I graduated in Architecture at Politecnico di Milano (2010) with a thesis dealing the redevelopment of the railway station of Porta Genova (Milano), recognizing the specificity of south Milan as a water-city. Since 2010, through university research and collaboration with Consorzio di Bonifica Est Ticino Villoresi, I’ve been developing strategies for the recovery of the Villoresi canal and the spaces around it. Even though my PhD program is in Interior and Exhibition, my thesis is about Landscape, namely about the relationship within Water and Public Space studying the case of Villoresi Canal, sited in the North of Milan. The aim of the research is to design strategies to transform it in a new hydraulic infrastructure for urban use. Thanks to Consorzio di Bonifica Est Ticino Villoresi and Regione Lombardia I was a collaborator within the project V’Arco Villoresi, a preliminary design about the whole length of the canal in synergy with projects, currently under way, for Expo2015

Within my PhD program in Interior and a thesis about open spaces I studied at the same time the big and the small scale of the architectural project. In the last year, also thanks to my experience at Columbia University, I approached landscape architecture while continuing my research in interior architecture.  In the last four years I’ve been Teaching Assistant for various Interior Courses at Politecnico: studying and redrawing residential interiors by (mostly) italian architects as Carlo Scarpa, Giancarlo De Carlo, Umberto Riva, Giuseppe Terragni. Stemming from this work and my interest in Interior design, I’m developing an ongoing photography project called Domestic Exhibition. In fact, I’m deeply interested in photography, and in particular Architectural Photography, considering and understanding it as an important tool of exploration, verification and comprehension of the architectural design.

During the last years, working at the university as Teaching Assistant and collaborator to many courses and researches at the Architectural School of Politecnico di Milano increased my skills, as well as architectural, of problem solving, in the organization of the courses and workshops (from lectures, design critiques, to study trips) and also curating exhibitions and publications linked to didactic work.

In the last three years, I had also the chance to work with NormaleArchitettura, an architectural firm based in Milano, in the design of interiors and open spaces competitions. Within this collaboration, the last project I worked on as a free-lance architect is the final design of the exhibition of Triennale del Legno in Trento, an international fair about wood (October 17th-19th 2014).

Consorzio Est Ticino Villoresi, Milano, IT, Architect

I have worked as an architect at Consorzio di Bonifica Est Ticino Villoresi in Milan as a collaborator on the project V’Arco Villoresi, a preliminary design about the whole length of the canal in synergy with projects, currently under way, for Expo2015. In particular I worked on:
- preliminary design for Expo 2015 on the project "Anello Verde Azzurro" a way to create a continuous cycling circuit is defined – “blue green ring” – of about 135 km that will link the Ticino park, the park of the Groane, and the Agricultural Park of South Milan, crossing natural, historical centers and suggestive rural landscapes.
requalification of the open spaces around Naviglio Grande -waterway in the south of Milan- The project wants to stress the importance of sensitivity in interpreting the landscape, that to be read needs small less evident adjustments, but very perceivable and long-lasting for whoever passes by on foot or on a bike.

NormaleArchitettura, Milano, IT, Architect Trainee

I've worked at Normalearchitettura as a trainee since October 2009 and until the end of March 2010 in Milan.
After that I kept collaborating with them for different competitions held in the past two years.
During the time spent there I worked on various architectural themes through different projects they were developing for clients.
Among these the redesigning of the interiors of “Scuola Europa” Teaching Insitute in Milan and the design of proposals and ideas for a new facade system and new internal distribution of an industrial warehouse.
As for competitions we worked together on a project for the requalification of Luigi di Savoia square in Peschiera del Garda (Verona, Italy), reclaiming a large public space in the city center in direct connection to the water system of the town. Another interesting project we developed responding to a call issued by Paisea magazine for the requalification of the old center of the town of Bunol (Valencia, Spain) with the objective of linking the medieval castle to the city through new connections and pathways.
