Los Angeles County Museum of Art has unveiled plans to build Jeff Koons' most insane project to date, 161-foot-tall crane with a circa 1940 era locomotive hanging from it. NYT
OK I typically think Jeff Koons is just laughing his way to the bank but I love, love, love this piece! And it also makes me want to cry because my husband is dealing with very similar visual/cultural issues in his current work yet just had to turn down a public commission because he's working a full time job and the 8-week, $3500 stipend meant we would lose health and money so he had to decline. no $1mil feasibility studies here!
The rumor in the railway preservation community was that Mr. Koons wanted to use one of the six preserved examples of this particular class of steam locomotive. The museums and cities that own these locomotives did not seem to think this would be a better use for their artifacts.
I personally think this technological and artistic territory is better left to Chris Burden.
It would be a much better sculpture, though, if all of it was fabricated rather than bought! I thought the article implied that fabrication from scratch was the intent.

Man, I really hope this thing gets built!
This is Jeff's ability to show the stupidity and lack of taste of the rich taken to the extreme. If only he was an architect.
I hope this doesn't get built. The last thing that LA and LACMA needs is a crane with a train. Try a crane with a wrecking ball.
