According to Duvar English, the Syrian government has announced that it will build a replica of Instanbul's Hagia Sophia after the Turkish government recently converted it into a mosque. Moscow will provide funding for the project "to show the importance of 'peaceful dialogue' between faiths." Built in 537, the Hagia Sophia is a classic example of Byzantine architecture and was then the largest interior space in the world. The structure is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Russia will help Syria construct a replica of the Hagia Sophia that will operate as an Orthodox cathedral after Turkey converted the museum into a mosque this monthhttps://t.co/99rUk1p6hX

This is dumb. Change my mind.
Think of it like the ersatz Eiffel in Las Vegas. It's adorable. "Welcome. Hag'ya Doin'?
more options to get a Hagia shot glass
^ Exactly! Doubling those opportunities for that, or a "Mom and Dad Went to Hagia Sophia and All I Got Was This T-shirt" t-shirt.
I would buy a "Hag'ya Doin'?" mug.
Money well spent I'm sure. Like Notre Dame. With people going hungry sick and dying everywhere s that politicians can flex their egos :(
Found the Russian.
Uhhhh.
Just to clarify my previous two replies were in response to comments that are no longer here.
what a time to be alive
Dicktators...
@ richmon
It is not everwhere. 80% of the Syrian people live below the poverty line and find nothing to silence the hunger of their children
This is just curious on all fronts. It will be a miniature replica and it will function as an Orthodox cathedral. Cleary the choice is symbolic, but what symbolism, what lies beneath it?
Russia will provide funding for the miniature Hagia Sophia in the western Syrian province of Hama to show the importance of "peaceful dialogue" between faiths, conservative lawmaker Vitaly Milonov said.
Moscow is backing the project as part of efforts to justify its military intervention in Syria by highlighting links between the war-torn country’s Orthodox Christian population and Russia, Syrian opposition activists told Al-Modon.

Architecturally, you have to wonder what they come up with. Stay tuned.
I assume it won't have minarets?
i was wondering about that too. nor the calligraphy panels at the ceiling? more original than the original...
I wonder if "miniature" is a mistranslation. But you have to wonder how much smaller it will be and how well it will scale down. Structurally much of the mass won't be needed, and if they keep the appearance of the mass it will look odd in a much smaller version.
