A giant, illuminated star; a world trade center; a beach: these are some of the ideas presented for the Gran Marina development proposed for Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. News items are now posted at the municipality's website (w/ images of presentations). Previous | translate
Ben van Berkel proposed a "giant star" island as a centerpiece for his project. It would include spaces for public events. He designed 70 percent of the surface area as open space, housing and 1200 tourist beds. Carlos Ferrater proposed a "world trade center" and his design encompasses 90 percent open spaces. Cesar Pelli presented his idea for an overwhelming park with emblematic structures and a sports pier. Sejima and Nishizawa (Sanaa) would also add a new island to the isthmus area but envision it as a great urban beach. Nicholas Grimshaw said he based his design on sustainability and proposed a botanical garden. Rafael Moneo sounded more traditional with a grand boulevard and an anchor structure.
All projects will be exhibited publicly from December 9 to January 9.
