I love songs / lyrics that that play as though it is a screenplay for a movie. I wanted to pick my favorite lyric but they were too many. A story of a small town girl wanting to get away as everyone does in a small town. Her brother got away but only as far as Vietnam. She got caught up in life and the blues found her because her dream of leaving was over. After trying to dull the pain and her disappointment in life she died. I love how Emmylou tied the image of the hammer from the third verse of making a "joyful sound" signifying the joys and hopes of youth to the image of the hammer in the last verse. Where she she laid the hammer down "without a sound" signifying dreams left unrealized.
This song is relatable because just about everybody has a life that they would rather be living or dreams to chase but because of economics or family commitments are stuck in the life they are in. Be honest with yourself would you trade everything in your life that you now have to chase your dreams? Or maybe a better question is knowing what you know now would you have made different choices earlier to to be now living your dream?
He never got farther than Vietnam, I was standin there with her when the telegram come For Lillian. Now he's lyin somewhere about a million miles from Meridian.
She tried hard to love him but it never did take It was just another way for the heart to break So she dug right in. But one thing they don't tell you about the blues When you got em You keep on falling cause there ain't no bottom There ain't know end. At least not for Lillian
Coulda' been the whiskey, Coulda been the pills, Coulda been the dream she was trying to kill.
Now the stars still fall on Alabama Tonight she finally laid That hammer down Without a sound In the red dirt ground
I've always been different with one foot over the line Winding up somewhere one step ahead or behind It ain't been so easy but I guess I shouldn't complain I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane
I'm thinking it is my childhood going to church every Sunday morning that makes me want mellow, beautiful music on Sunday mornings. Aimee Mann's voice is particularly good.

Starting the day off right with some Front Bottoms:
Went sailing this weekend with my dad - we don't get to do it much anymore - and we both know his days are numbered. He's remarkably frank about it. We put on a disc of classical and just had fun chatting. It was low key, but I know I'll remember it forever.

Ike Reilly's seventh album was released last Tuesday. The title track Born on Fire is great (I especially love the harmonizing) but I can't find it online, so here is a second track, Hangin' Around.
I heard an interview about Gimme Shelter; the song was recorded in the overbite, they called in this background singer at 1:30 in the morning. She came in in curlers and a housecoat and laid down her vocals.
What (newish) music are you listening to these days?
Although not exactly new, yesterday I was jamming Balkan Beat Box for 8 hours of autocad.
