Looking for some freelance work for firms that I never worked for. I have been looking at freelance website such as Freelancer and Upwork but these platform take a commission and a lot of the job offers seem to have unrealistic expectations. How do you go about finding freelance work? Should I just cold email local firms in my area?

If you're looking to do contract work for other architects, get involved in AIA and CSI - that's where you'll meet them.
If you are looking for commissions as an independent architect/designer, look for organizations of real estate and property management professionals, or just good ol' Rotary, Lions, Elks, etc...

You can put your resume on file at most AIA chapters. Also try the jobs section here on Archinect for listings of freelance and contract positions.
