In the later part of the eighteenth and first part of the nineteenth century homeowners along the Gulf Coast and in the Tidewater areas along the Atlantic just assumed their houses would be flooded from time-to-time and built two-story homes. The first floor had roughly finished interior walls of stone, brick or concrete. This story housed store rooms and the (then non-high tech) kitchen. The fine furnishings and woodwork were reserved for the living areas on the second floor. Even the front door was on the second floor. After a flood it was not too much work to clean out the first floor and restore things to normal. Seems a more attractive solution than putting the house on stilts as you often see along the beach.

that'sjust the bullshit the puritans invented to justify their land grabs, and they were a lot more stoic than your average american. Capitalism will drown nonetheless, it can't go on forever under any scenario, shit will dissapear forever, land, crops, livestock, bees, fish- by the time we start eating a paste made out of seaweed it will be just a matter of when, not if.
