Based on the job descriptions I have read from several firms, there are those that ask for a "portfolio" and "sample portfolio". What is the difference in terms of layout? Is a sample portfolio simpler and shorter than a regular portfolio?

A sample portfolio is a teaser and its intent is to show your very best work. There is the added bonus that it forces you to triage your work as too many applicants build 40+ page portfolios thinking someone has the time to read them.

A sample portfolio is just that, a sample of your portfolio. So, choose your samples wisely ;)

See it as a wine tasting: they have a sip of your portfolio and most likely spit it out but sometimes they like what they spat out and want some more so.
