Barcelona Hostel

A proposal for a 100m tall hostel to be sited in the Barcelona Gothic Quarter. The project delaminate the performativity layers necessary for a high-rise design (structure, enclosure, circulation, and mechanical systems) in order to two conflicting problems. Urbanistically, the step back of the building is an attempt to hide a 100m tower in the existing urban context. Prior to the step back the building facade follows the average building height of approximately 30m giving the passing pedestrian a continuous face along Calle de Montalegre and the North-East side of Plaza del Macba. Commercially, the artistic sculpture gives the Gothic Quarter a Landmark through which it can easily be located from several kilometers away.
