Hermosa Strand Residence

Rugged and weathered, this original beach shack has been a native to Hermosa Beach’s strand for the past sixty years, and at the time of the project, offered hidden value worth preserving in a renovation.

A tear down would certainly have been easier.  However, towering above the height limit, encroaching past property lines, and leveraging a lack of open space were all valuable elements that allowed the property to command unsurpassed, uninterrupted views of the horizon.

That said, the question that needed to be solved was: how to keep the irreplaceable, non- conforming elements of the existing home.

As a result, Laney LA  designed a solution that would preserve the bones of the brown, shingled beach shack, and transform it into a highlight of coastal design.

The end product now features mix of white siding and brick veneer elegantly wrapping the updated exterior of the home. The fenestrations also received new windows and large sliding glass doors with a sleek, extruded frame surrounding each opening. The interiors were refreshed  with a light, natural wood floors, white painted tongue and groove walls and ceilings, and a neutral coastal pallet that succeeds in creating a space that is light and tranquil.
