Culture Through Education

The Azores has a rich and unique history of viticulture that was practically lost when Westerners moved in with tourism and disease. The Azorean “lava wine” and its ancient vines are almost entirely extinct. The historic lava walls are falling into disrepair and those who still make the wine have no-one to pass the tradition on to.

The goal of this project was to create a program where students could live, work, learn and teach in a unique setting; an education you could not experience anywhere else in the world. A museum portion would excite the current tourism boom and show how the Azores’ culture can thrive in the current economy.  The site would be on the largest island, Sao Miguel, in the city of Ponta Delgada. It would be located towards the outskirts of the city so it is still accessible but there would be room for growing expansion. It would be located in the already prevalent “education hub” near the University, a private K-12 school and a botanical research center.
