Museum Technology Manager
Seeking a dynamic leader with a passion for delivering impactful museum installations through meticulous planning and execution. Under the direction of the Exhibitions Technical Director, the Museum Technology Manager will oversee cross-functional teams, ensuring the successful integration and functionality of digital media, interactive displays, and immersive technologies. This role will be responsible for managing project timelines, coordinating resources, and driving innovation to deliver engaging educational installations. The incumbent will help the California Science Center execute cutting-edge experience designs to inspire curiosity and spark imagination in our visitors while deepening their engagement with scientific concept.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in museum studies, exhibit design, arts administration, theme park management, or a related field preferred.
- 3 or more years of proven experience in logistics and project management within the museum, exhibit design, experience design, fine art, theme park, film production management, or related industries.
- Strong technical aptitude and familiarity with digital fabrication, audiovisual systems, interactive technologies, rapid prototyping, hardware/software interface, software languages, and graphics production techniques.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, including experience managing teams and fostering a positive and inclusive work culture.
- Creative problem-solving skills and a passion for innovation in museum exhibition design and interpretation.
- Knowledge of museum best practices, standards, and regulations related to exhibition development, safety, and accessibility.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- 1. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Lead the end-to-end process of specialized exhibit retrofits and content updates, from research and development to project planning, to on-the-ground execution, ensuring projects are completed on time and on budget.
- 2. COLLABORATION: Work closely with stakeholders including, but not limited to: museum curators, exhibit designers, educators and floor staff, to plan, develop, produce and install immersive and interactive installations that align with the museum's thematic focus and educational goals.
- 3. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: Coordinate and track the allocation of resources, including personnel, equipment, and materials, to support exhibit projects, optimizing efficiency and cost-effectiveness while maintaining high-quality standards.
- 4.TECHNICAL OVERSIGHT: Oversee the highly specialized and technical aspects of installations and interactive exhibit production, including but not limited to: ensuring seamless integration and functionality between digital components, technical hardware and electronic components.
- 5.PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT : Oversee the end-to end production of specialized gallery experiences including all aspects of physical fabrication and installation, installation plan design, and oversite both on and off the floor. Must have a broad understanding of museum best practices and processes.
- 6. QUALITY ASSURANCE: Conduct thorough inspections and testing of highly technical components of installations and interactive exhibits to uphold quality standards, safety regulations, and ADA accessibility requirements, addressing any issues promptly and proactively. 7. TEAM LEADERSHIP: Provide direction, guidance, and support to staff and contractors, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment while promoting professional development and skill enhancement.
- 8. DOCUMENTATION AND REPORTING: Maintain accurate records, documentation, and project reports for all exhibits projects: tracking progress, expenses, and lessons learned to inform future projects and improve operational efficiency.
- 9. COMMUNICATION: Serve as the primary point of contact for internal stakeholders, external vendors, and traveling exhibit partners, facilitating clear, trackable, and effective communication to ensure alignment on project objectives and expectations.
