The University of Virginia School of Architecture seeks outstanding emerging designers and educators to join our faculty as Virginia Architecture Fellows. This one-year, non-tenure track Assistant Professor position is renewable for up to two years and focuses on both research and teaching. We are looking for candidates with strong design experience across various scales and project types, particularly those with cross-disciplinary interests that connect architecture with our partner departments within the school: landscape architecture, architectural history, urban and environmental planning. We seek exceptional design teaching capacity, compelling research proposals, and collaborators who share our commitment to advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion goals toward a more equitable institution, practice, and constructed environment.
The Virginia Architecture Fellow will join the faculty as a full-time Assistant Professor, General Faculty, to develop a 1-year creative research project and pedagogy at the University of Virginia. Fellows are expected to spend at least one year in residence. In their first year, they benefit from mentorship, a reduced teaching load of one course, meaning they will teach three classes while also pursuing a research project to be exhibited in the spring. While the fellowship is awarded on an annual or biennial basis, successful fellows are eligible to have their appointments renewed for a second year at the rank of Assistant Professor, General Faculty upon review of their teaching, research, and creative practice.
The Virginia Architecture Fellowships provide a gateway into academia and support the development of research and teaching trajectories. These positions provide an opportunity to teach studios and courses in areas related to the candidate’s expertise, resources for the development of research, venues to share work with the broader school community, and opportunities to interact in an intellectually diverse, creative environment. In addition to three courses and service expectations as determined by the department chair, fellows are invited to work as individuals and collaborate across the school and the university. The School of Architecture and UVA promote and facilitate design excellence and impact by encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration, providing mentorship, and supporting research development, within the school and across the university. Researchers and designers utilize library systems and recently renovated studio, shop, and project spaces, providing state of the art facilities for creative work, scholarly inquiry, and collaborative research.
We invite submissions of compelling design experience and project proposals to be reviewed by a faculty committee and invited for remote interviews.
The University of Virginia is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer committed to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service.
