Senior Architect

We are currently looking for a skilled and self-motivated Senior Architect to join our team in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Applicants must be technically strong, have excellent written communication and data analysis skills, and be able to perform with limited supervision and work on a range of diverse project tasks. Our Santa Fe Studio specializes in designing culturally-responsive and socially-impactful places that reflect the unique context and heritage of the region. Our thirteen-person team, led by Joseph Kunkel (Northern Cheyenne) and Shawn Evans, brings decades of experience working in the area and a deep understanding of the cultural and ecological heritage of the North American West. We work with communities to design and develop housing, healthcare and educational facilities, community centers, and spaces that preserve and uplift public memory. Additionally, our studio is home to the Sustainable Native Communities Design Lab (SNCDL), which focuses on building wealth, opportunity, and resilience in Indian Country. Our office and firm are excited to be growing the field of architecture with individuals representing diverse backgrounds and ranges of experiences. Through cross-office staffing opportunities, virtual continuing education, a range of social events, and site visits, our local team stays closely connected with MASS’s Boston, Poughkeepsie, and Kigali offices. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and/or play a leadership role in small to medium projects and within teams of designers.

  • Work closely with MASS Principals and Design Directors as well as Project Partners (clients) to develop project visions and concepts. 

  • Lead project teams through the development of drawing sets from schematic design through construction documentation and construction administration.

  • Meet project deadlines within a multi-project portfolio; assuring timely, high-quality deliverables. 

  • Coordinate work of consulting engineers and other design disciplines.

  • Carry out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures.

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to designers.

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • A professional degree (Bachelor or Master of Architecture from an NAAB accredited program).

  • A minimum of five years as a licensed architect with project experience navigating design and construction on a variety of project types and scales (affordable multi-family housing, cultural institutions, community planning preferred).   

  • Experience working with a variety of local, regional, state, and national regulatory, philanthropic, and community-serving organizations.

  • Experience leading community engagement efforts.

  • Excel in technical drawing in Revit, including construction documentation and detailing.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and technical architectural skills.

  • Bring respect, open mindedness and clear communication to each collaboration.

  • Work well within diverse project, community and client teams.

  • Applicants with technical and theoretical knowledge of historic preservation as well as applicants competent in data analysis software such as ArcGIS will be the most competitive.

Physical Demands:

This position requires the employee to sit/stand at a desk for long periods of time.

Travel Requirements:

This position will require occasional regional/domestic or international travel to meet partner and project needs.

Work Environment:

This position is required to be based in an office 3 days a week, with two days of remote work per week permitted with prior manager approval.  While performing the duties of this job the employee will work in an open office environment with moderate flow of others through the space and dedicated space available for quiet work.

Salary and Benefits

MASS Design Group offers competitive salary and benefits, including a hybrid work policy, minimum three-week vacation policy, paid parental leave, 401k, health care insurance, among others. The salary range of $70-90,000 for this position will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience.
