DESCRIPTION: Located in the heart of Detroit’s Cultural Center, Wayne State University is seeking a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Design with a teaching emphasis in Interior Design in the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art, Art History, and Design. 

The ideal candidate is, first, excited to come to Detroit. This person understands Detroit is a city of arts and culture, where its core identity is rooted in innovation and creativity. Wayne State University’s distinct characteristic is its Detroit location. A center for design and innovation, Detroit is the only city in the US, designated as a UNESCO City of Design. The Detroit Institute of Arts, one of the nation’s premiere art museums is a block from campus. Detroit is rich with engagement opportunities, of note is the dynamic annual Detroit Month of Design, a series of exhibitions and events in venues across the city and surrounding the Wayne State Campus.

This position is the perfect opportunity for the right person to be part of the Detroit design community and a member of a team of faculty shaping the department and the Interior Design program.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will teach courses in Interior Design and may teach in other spatial design areas of the department that connect to the candidate’s research expertise. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct a program of creative and/or scholarly work, contribute to curriculum development and other aspects of the intellectual life of the department, and provide appropriate professional service.

QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking an exceptional designer/teacher with a strong research practice in Interior Design or a related field. An appropriate terminal degree is required in design, art or closely related field. A willingness to mentor undergraduate and graduate students from diverse populations is also required.

Preferred Qualifications: We are seeking an exceptional Interior Designer with a strong research practice and experience teaching Interior Design at the college level. A minimum of two years teaching at the college level, and evidence of teaching effectiveness.

THE JAMES PEARSON DUFFY DEPARTMENT OF ART, ART HISTORY, AND DESIGN:  The department has a deep history in Detroit located at the center of the historic Cass Corridor art movement. The department offers programs leading to the following undergraduate degrees: BA in Art, BFA in Art, BFA in Design, BA in Art History and BA or BS in Fashion Design and Merchandising. The department also offers the following graduate degrees: MA in Art, MFA in Art, and MA in Art History. The department currently has 21 full-time faculty and a staff of 10 for 15 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. The James Pearson Duffy Department of Art, Art History, and Design, is one of four departments in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts; the other constituent units are the Department of Communication, the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance, and the Department of Music. The college offers 17 undergraduate programs, 10 graduate programs and three graduate certificate programs. It is home to today’s aspiring artists, performers, scholars, dancers, debaters, entrepreneurs and communication professionals who all represent the college’s legacy of excellence in our respective fields.

From debate to dance, jazz to journalism, and fashion design to center stage, our students create captivating performances, inspire artistic and academic excellence, and conduct innovative research on behalf of our Detroit community.
