WHY Los Angeles seeks Job Captain / Project Manager

Based in Los Angeles and New York, WHY was founded by Kulapat Yantrasast in 2004 and has established itself in the international design vanguard for widely-acclaimed projects that serve the arts, communities, and the environment. The 40+ person practice is structured as five workshops focusing on Ideas, Buildings, Landscape Museums and Objects—allowing us to approach projects from multiple angles to develop holistic, experience-driven solutions that are also provocative and unique. We continue to build these “ecologies of disciplines”, to and expand our network of diverse thinkers, both within and beyond the studio.  We believe everyone has the potential to bring a unique perspective, multiplying the possibilities of a collaborative work environment.

We are looking for an Job Captain / Project Manager who is passionate about design and has the skills to see projects through execution. You will be expected to lead and contribute to a variety of project types; custom residential, multi-family residential, commercial interior and hospitality work. Current projects on the boards are a unique startup workspace roll out, luxury condominium remodel, and a high-end restaurant.

In this role, you will:

  • Own the development of the design and successful delivery of the project working with the Creative Director & Senior Interior Designer
  • Produce contract documents, including CDs & permit sets.
  • Document clear bid package in coordination with consultants 
  • Know how to seamlessly incorporate CBC and local jurisdictional requirements into the design.
  • Develop schedules and specifications for projects (i.e., lighting, electrical, fixtures, etc.) 
  • Assist the Senior Interior Designer & Senior PM with preparation of presentations for client meetings; also attend & support the meetings 
  • Build and maintain relationships with vendors and contractors while ensuring quality of final product for client 
  • Be able to perform standard CA duties independently, including submittal reviews, on-site meetings, and fabrication coordination.
  • Communicate with vendors to verify necessity of any proposed change orders 
  • Work with leaders to continuously improve design process and collaboration within the multidisciplinary studio;
  • Have opportunity for growth, management training,  and support junior staff.
  • Travel on occasion

Required Skills and Credentials.

  • A degree in interior architecture or a B. Arch
  • Minimum five years’ experience documentation for the construction of interior environments
  • Strong listening skills with superior, professional communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Highly organized
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD & Revit, Adobe Suite, and Microsoft Suite 
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule workflow in a deadline driven environment 
  • Strategic thinking skills with creative vision that is both modern and classic 
  • Strong problem-solving skills with situational understanding.
  • Ability to work well with different perspectives. Has experience working in a design-intensive, collaborative environment.

Additional Skills/Credentials that will be considered a plus

  • Licensure.
  • Experience in business development, strong existing vendor relationships in Los Angeles
  • Working knowledge of Enscape, Lumion

Position Type, Compensation & Benefits:

  • This is a full time, exempt position that is salaried with benefits.
  • Compensation: Depends highly on experience, but we offer base salaries at or above market rates.
