MICHAEL K. CHEN ARCHITECTURE (MKCA) is a growing New York City-based architecture firm dedicated to producing innovative and thoughtful built work and applied research. The office’s portfolio encompasses a wide range of scales, from the design of furniture, to interiors, to buildings, all of which is deeply informed by a commitment to experimentation and craft at the highest level, a playful sensibility, and a love of tinkering, of drawing, and of making. Established in 2011, MKCA has been recognized with numerous international awards and press, and is sought after by a diverse clientele.

We are seeking talented intermediate level architects with 3-6+ years of full time professional experience to join our team as Project Architects. Project Architects lead small design teams within the studio, manage consultant teams, interface with clients, and work closely with the firm principal and associates to develop and manage projects from conception to completion.

The ideal candidate is one with strong design skills; aesthetic sensibilities, values, and an intellectual point of view that are complementary to the practice; and is someone who is organized, detail-oriented, and eager to get their hands dirty. The position offers many opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the work of the office and for professional advancement. Members of our team also regularly participate in Design Advocates projects and initiatives.

  • A professional degree in Architecture. M.Arch, preferred. Licensure is welcome, but not required.

  • Strong digital design skills. Fluency with Rhino, Revit, and AutoCAD are a must. Grasshopper and computational design experience is highly desirable.

  • Experience with multiple phases of the design process from conception to completion.

  • Experience with producing architectural documentation for construction.

  • A demonstrated commitment to making, whether through analog or digital means, including CNC milling, Robotics, 3D printing, or others.

  • 3-6+ years of professional architecture experience, preferably in New York City.

This is a full-time, in-person position with a competitive salary commensurate with a candidate’s experience and qualifications. We offer employee benefits that include paid time off; health, dental, and vision coverage; and 401(K) with employer match. MKCA is a Queer POC-owned business and committed to an inclusive, equality-minded, and diverse workplace.  We do however, have a special affinity for nerds. And some of our team are dogs.

Current projects include ground up houses, large scale renovations and residential interiors, community oriented projects in healthcare and social services, libraries and other design-forward institutional projects from New York City to Hawaii. Our projects frequently straddle architecture, interior design, and industrial design, often in collaboration with artists and other designers, scientists, and engineers. We work as a tightly knit team operating from a studio environment in Manhattan, and all team members participate in the full spectrum of our services and activities.

In March of 2020, MKCA co-founded Design Advocates (D/A), a network of over 200 small firms and individuals collaborating on pro-bono projects, research, and advocacy to help disadvantaged communities and nonprofits adapt their spaces for the COVID-19 crisis and serve the public good. D/A is working on  projects with public schools and libraries, arts organizations, social service agencies and community development organizations, local restaurants, and New York City agencies, and is committed to putting design excellence into service toward equality and the common good.

More about the studio here.

We work in an open studio space in Manhattan. Because we work closely and in proximity to one another and others, all of our employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 in accordance with the current guidance from the EEOC.
