College of the Atlantic seeks a full-time faculty member to serve as the Charles Eliot Chair in Ecological Planning, Policy, and Design. Since the Chair was first established at College of the Atlantic, it has been a studio-based faculty position. We seek to expand its purview beyond the influence of Eliot’s regional and cultural legacy in the Northeast USA in order to serve more varied communities and ecologies. Understanding the human ecological interfaces within and between human settlement and the landscape is fundamental to the enterprise of creating more compassionate and sustainable relationships in the world. 


The Chair holder will design courses to provide students the agency to learn applied design within the studio workshop; examine ways to shape more sustainable and equitable built environments while understanding the aesthetics of the spatial, societal, political, and the ecological within a larger and more inclusive historical, social, and cultural context. We aim to expand the range of architectural study at COA to include applicable spatial discourses and emergent fields of sustainable design within a studio setting through courses that, for example, query the built environment as it relates to climate justice and aim to be systematically responsive to diverse natural and cultural locations. 

We seek a teacher with practical expertise in the architectural/landscape design studio and planning in the field; one who is experienced both in crafting drawings by hand and with software applications, and alert to emerging technologies. The faculty member would be expected to offer courses that utilize our GIS Lab. A faculty in this position is expected to inspire the development of a student’s ability to analyze, appraise, model, participate and employ critical thinking in transdisciplinary processes that support communities and protect ecologies. 

A candidate should be able to offer a constellation of courses in at least three of the following areas: Landscape Architecture, Environmental Aesthetics, Land Use Planning, Urban Design and/or Planning, Community-Engaged Architectural Practice, Building Science and Technology, Environmental Design and Policy. The successful candidate is also expected to offer at least one foundational studio course as part of the Arts and Design introductory curriculum. 


Terminal degree in architecture (M. Arch. or Ph.D.), landscape architecture, or one of the listed areas of course offerings is required. We prefer a candidate with a proven record of exemplary teaching experience and professional achievement. 

The committee will seek evidence that the candidate has the ability to help students plan, conceptualize, and carry out independent research projects; challenge and inspire students to understand and use methodological and theoretical insights in complex, creative, and practical ways. 

We encourage applicants with interests across the sciences, arts, and humanities who are comfortable working collaboratively in a college without a formal architecture program – with colleagues from different disciplinary traditions within the broad-based transdisciplinary curriculum of the college. The candidate must demonstrate an ability to simultaneously engage students at different levels and varying academic interests and motivations. Advising and mentoring students, directing senior projects, supervising independent studies and other local research projects are part of the responsibilities of faculty membership.

  • A concise diversity, equity and inclusion statement. This may include personal experience; ways you have built your understanding of DEI beyond your lived experience; and specific ways that you have and plan to incorporate these in your approach to teaching, mentorship, and service.
  • 5-7 short course proposals (brief descriptions not syllabi). These can be previously taught courses; however, at least 2 of these should be courses you’d like to teach and have not yet had the opportunity to do so. COA is an interdisciplinary college of approximately 350 students and 35 faculty – where theory is tied to practice. Faculty are not organized via departments and all students design their own major in Human Ecology (BA, MPhil). The average class size is 13. Our educational approach integrates knowledge from all academic disciplines and seeks to understand and improve the relationships between humans and their built, natural, and social-cultural environments.
