New Avenue is a mission-driven startup that is focused on solving the housing crisis. We believe that turning single family homes into complexes of two or more homes will be the most important change in our housing system in our lifetime. We are leading the industry by optimizing energy use, sustainability, and quality of life.
The Role: Design team member with a focus on residential projects that transform single-family homes into complexes of two or more homes. Our primary focus is on ADUs that transform older homes to become family compounds. The architect/designer position is available for a broad range of experience and we encourage any designer who is passionate about changing the future of housing to apply.
Your responsibilities will include working with clients from initial consultations through to completion of construction administration on projects including ADUs and small plexes. Typical projects include house-lifts and detached two and three-bedroom ADUs ranging from 400-4000 square feet. You will be responsible for client communication, project management, design work, drafting and detailing, presentations, permitting, and construction administration.
Your Qualifications:
You are passionate about architecture and design, and making our built environment more beautiful, sustainable, and equitable. You enjoy working with people and solving problems using creative design solutions. You are a good listener and communicator, making our clients feel well-cared for and that their needs are being met and problems are being solved beautifully and efficiently.
Your Activities:
You will be part of the New Avenue design team and will be assigned to a variety of residential projects throughout the California Bay area. This is a fully remote position, but candidates should be comfortable traveling for meeting clients and construction site visits, Covid-safety dependent.
On a day to day basis, this position involves: logging in to our self-developed project management app, following up with client communications, developing project schedules, executing design work, presenting ideas to the internal team and to clients, managing and collaborating with outside consultants, executing design work using Revit and other tools, creating full Construction Documents, fostering the project through the permitting process, and facilitating construction administration services. This requires the capacity to juggle several projects at the same time so you must be adept at project management and disciplined in following a strict project schedule by adhering to deadlines and deliverables.
You will be assigned to your own projects and clients within the NA team under the direction of a senior staff member. This gives you a lot of flexibility and design freedom as well as a lot of responsibility for the success of your projects.

About New Avenue:
New Avenue is a diversified sustainable development company with a leading in-house developed technology, a full-service design–build division and expansive involvement in local and state policy groups that impact housing. We manage residential projects from the initial call through a comprehensive design and construction process. The entire process is centered on the homeowner and our goal is to create a home that will be a source of health, happiness, and value throughout your lifetime and for generations to follow. We do this with a focus on quality, transparency, sustainability and improving the built environment through design excellence.
Our Core Values:
Transparency
We built our process to empower clients, designers and builders with the ability to be honest about the entire development process. We aim to replace the frustrations of unexpected fees, unrealistic budget expectations and schedules with honesty, transparency and a collaborative respectful culture. Using the budgets of real, completed projects as examples, we help you set realistic cost expectations from the beginning. Removing the fear of the unknown to set the creative process free and pursue the best possible design and construction quality. Our proprietary app keeps communication, agreements, invoices, and payments all in one place and accessible from anywhere.
Sustainability
We design homes that address sustainability in three ways: environmental, social, and economic. Two of the most important factors in a sustainable healthy home is where you live and who you live with. We design to maximize quality of life - both for our client, our neighborhoods, and the global environment. First we expand access to ownership in the most sought after neighborhoods, then we design for increased connection to family and neighbors, then we decrease energy use and improve materials.
Design Excellence
We custom design and custom build all projects because each property, client and existing building is unique. Creating new housing in existing cities entails a wide range of architectural styles, uses, and project types.
