MICHAEL K. CHEN ARCHITECTURE (MKCA) is a growing New York City-based architecture firm dedicated to producing innovative and thoughtful built work and applied research. The office’s portfolio encompasses a wide range of scales, from the design of furniture, to interiors, to buildings, all of which is deeply informed by a commitment to craft at the highest level, a playful sensibility, and a love of tinkering, of drawing, and of making. Established in 2012, MKCA has been recognized with numerous international awards and press, and is sought after by a diverse clientele.

Current projects include ground up houses, large scale renovations, community oriented projects in healthcare and social services, commercial interiors, libraries and other small institutional projects, exhibitions, and writing. Our projects frequently straddle architecture, interior design, and industrial design, often in collaboration with artists and other designers, scientists, and engineers. We work as a tightly knit team operating from a studio environment in Manhattan, and all team members participate in the full spectrum of our services and activities.

In March of 2020, MKCA co-founded Design Advocates (D/A), a network of over 200 small firms and individuals collaborating on pro-bono projects, research, and advocacy to help disadvantaged communities and nonprofits adapt their spaces for the COVID-19 crisis and serve the public good. D/A is working on numerous projects for public schools and libraries, arts organizations, social service agencies and community development organizations, local restaurants, and New York City agencies, and is committed to putting design excellence into service toward equality and the common good.

We are seeking talented junior level architects to join our team. Junior  staff work with more senior project managers and the firm principal to develop projects from concept to realization, generating design studies and production documents, and the representation of projects for presentation. Junior staff engage the entire range of the office’s creative workflow through sketching, parametric design, digital modeling, rendering, drafting, BIM, physical model making, and prototyping.

The ideal candidate is one with strong design skills; aesthetic sensibilities, an intellectual point of view, and values that are complementary to the practice; and is someone who is curious, detail-oriented, hardworking, and eager to get their hands dirty. The position offers many opportunities to contribute meaningfully to the work of the office and for professional advancement. Members of our team also regularly participate in D/A projects and initiatives.

  • A professional degree in Architecture. M.Arch, preferred.

  • Strong digital design skills. Fluency with Rhino, Revit, and AutoCAD are a must. Grasshopper and parametric design fluency is highly desired.

  • Strong drawing and graphic skills.

  • A demonstrated commitment to making, whether through analog or digital means, including CNC milling, Robotics, 3D printing, or others.

  • 1-3 years of professional architecture experience.

This is a full-time, in-person position with a competitive salary commensurate with a candidate’s experience and qualifications. We offer employee benefits that include paid time off; health, dental, and vision coverage; and 401(K) with employer match. MKCA is a Queer POC-owned business and committed to an inclusive, equality-minded, and diverse workplace.  We do however, have an affinity for nerds. And some of our team are dogs.

We work in an open studio space in Manhattan. Because we work closely and in proximity to one another and others, our employees are required to be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter with salary requirements, current CV, and portfolio to Please limit attachments to 20mb.

We are unfortunately not able to consider candidates without authorization to work in the United States. This is an in-person position in New York City. We will not consider remote arrangements.
