Re:modern is seeking a Project Architect to grow with the firm to meet expanded demand. We are hiring for SF Bay Area mid-Peninsula team members ready to jump in on residential projects that are 50% architectural and 50% interiors.

Job Opening: Project Architect

Core Responsibilities

  • Oversee the design and construction of single-family residential projects. 

  • Lead the design process while creating the project deliverables. 

  • Prepare and coordinate drawings, details, and documentation for both design and construction. 

  • Work directly with the Principal Architect to ensure that projects align with Re:modern’s goals and objectives. 

  • Plan, manage, and monitor resource allocation.

Other Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with clients and consultants to determine project requirements.

  • Lead projects through the entitlement process.

  • May direct staff in the development of project drawings, studies, and documents.

  • Estimate time/resources for proposals and contracts.

  • Manage project decisions using instruments of service in an organized manner. 

  • Ensure that work produced has a high level of accuracy, consistency, and meets applicable codes.

  • Construction administration and jobsite visits to confirm work is matching the project’s design intent.

  • Contribute to the company’s systems, templates, and standard operating procedures.

Required Skills

  • Effectively communicate with a wide range of project participants (clients, consultants, governing bodies, residential contractors, and in-house collaborators).

  • Working knowledge of the planning process, building codes, and regulations.

  • Expert user of AutoCAD.

  • Proficient at producing industry-standard drawings with minimal supervision.

  • Proficient user of graphic design software (Adobe Suite, Canva). Adept at navigating various file formats and sizes to effectively integrate elements into final deliverables.

  • Proficient user of office software (Google Suite, MS Word and Excel).

  • Comfortable user of 3D modeling software (Sketchup).

  • Tech-savvy with virtual meetings, file sharing, working in the cloud, and adapting to ever-changing project management and communication landscapes.

  • Able to identify, design, and coordinate construction-level details.

  • Able to solve complex client concerns via straightforward spatial solutions.

  • An attention to detail.

  • Proficient at creating modern and aesthetically pleasing solutions consistent with the Re:modern brand.

Desired Skills

  • Working knowledge of the interior design industry and standard processes.

  • Proficient at sourcing and procuring furnishings and finishes from stock, resale, and custom markets.

  • Interior styling

  • An eye for photographing spaces and vignettes.

  • Able to approach projects with a positive, professional, and can-do attitude.


  • M.Arch, B.Arch, or B.A. in Architecture, Interior Architecture, or relevant field from an accredited program.

  • Demonstrated, firsthand experience producing permit sets and navigating the residential entitlement process. Experience on CA projects preferred.

  • Licensed or in the NCARB process. For professionals without registration, your job title will be Project Designer.

  • Hybrid- or in-person work at our San Mateo, CA office location and mid-Peninsula jobsites. This is not a remote-only position.

This position comprises a mix of client-facing activities and focused production work. 

Example 1 of a Typical Week:

  • Meet at a Client’s project location for a Kick-off Meeting and conduct initial house measure.

  • Return to the office or WFH to draw existing plans and design options.

  • Brainstorming, charrette, and in-house revisions.

  • Prep and meet with the City.

  • Produce drawings and presentations.

Example 2 of a Typical Week:

  • Coordinate DD backgrounds with Consultants.

  • Develop and draw details for Project A CDs.

  • Visit jobsite and perform CA for Project B.

  • Work on Project C while waiting for other parties to respond on Projects A & B.

  • Estimate time, research, and assist with proposal writing for prospective Project D.

Work Setting

Our small, creative office is located in San Mateo, California (about 5 miles south of SFO), convenient to the downtown Burlingame Caltrain station. We are in a loft-like space with tall ceilings. Your workstation will be next to big windows with plenty of natural light throughout the day. Come into the office for collaboration and focused productivity. Balance it with work from home, if you need it. 

Compensation and Hours

This staff position can be either Part-Time (preferred) or Full-Time. For Part-Time candidates, the opportunity exists for this position to transition to full-time employment. Local applicants only, please.

We compensate competitively hourly at market rate, depending on experience and fit. We invite you to research your rate using PayScale.
