The School of Architecture and Design at the New York Institute of Technology invites outstanding candidates for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Architecture with expertise in urban health, systemic and strategic health-related design, and the relationship between community resilience and healthcare. This position will be based in our NYC and/or Long Island campuses and requires teaching, coordination, and curriculum development at the graduate and undergraduate levels in advanced and integrative architectural design studios as well as courses, seminars, and electives in this specialization.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate a track record of scholarly achievements, creative activities, and professional practice with an agenda to advance design approaches engaging with critical environmental, social and entrepreneurial perspectives crucial to the advancement of architectural and design practice for purpose.

 Responsibilities

Candidate responsibilities for a successful academic path will include teaching, research, and service. Essential will be the contribution to the School’s curriculum development, studio sequences coordination, participation in program accreditation, student mentoring and advising, retention and recruitment initiatives, and service activities to the community, the SoAD, and the Institution.

This position is intended to support our new post-professional Master of Science in Architecture, Health and Design (M.S.AHD). This new graduate program brings together disciplines such as urban planning, architecture, interior, and industrial design, computation and prototyping, medicine, health, and social sciences professions.  The M.S.AHD builds a platform for those experts and specialists promoting interdisciplinary collaboration in the area of health and care.

Areas of emphasis include experience with urban strategies, complex architectural projects, policy and decision-making processes, the integration of building systems, material explorations, simulations, and fabrication addressing qualities of the built environment affecting health, wellness, and community resilience. 

In addition, it will be desirable to have candidates with skills, interests, and experience in one or more of these areas: robotics, augmented reality, computational modeling, machine learning, material science, nanotechnology, advances in bioengineering, environmental simulations, data sensing, smart systems and interfaces, health data and devices, physical computing, data science and artificial intelligence applied to architecture and design.

We are seeking a candidate passionate about the emerging potential of intersections in Design + Health that promise to infuse our curricula with innovative and entrepreneurial perspectives, and who is interested in emerging technologies that are informing creative pedagogical models and the pursuit of new knowledge at the NYIT School of Architecture and Design.

The candidate will be expected to have an active role in the development of cross-disciplinary research projects leading to the expansion of ongoing collaborations and partnerships within the institution, other universities, with the profession and the industry, nationally and internationally, contributing to NYIT’s excellence and the enhancement of NYIT’s reputation.

 Qualifications

  • First professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch or international equivalent) plus professional license or post-professional Masters and/or Ph.D.
  • Assistant Professor: ability to teach topical courses/seminars/electives in the area of the position description; ability to teach architectural design studios.
  • Associate Professor: ability to teach topical courses/seminars/electives in the area of the position description as demonstrated with at least 5 years of relevant teaching experience; ability to teach architectural design studios.
  • Evidence of specialized research, academic, professional/creative activities, and achievements with strong and innovative design sensitivity.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • Contributions to externally funded research.
