Position Description:

The Tulane schools of Liberal Arts and Architecture are partnering to hire a colleague in the instruction of Urban Studies at the undergraduate level.

At Tulane, faculty and students across the university are studying pressing urban problems, including the processes of urbanization that must address climate change and social and environmental justice. Currently, undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing an urban focus in their coursework are able to enroll in the Urban Studies Minor, jointly administered by faculty in the schools of Liberal Arts and Architecture. At this juncture, we desire to expand undergraduate urban studies offerings in order to build the program (https://liberalarts.tulane.edu/programs/urban-studies).

Urban Studies at Tulane is a standalone minor and a possible specialization within different disciplines. Students enrolled in the Urban Studies Minor represent a broad spectrum of undergraduate majors including Sociology, History, Communication, Economics, Political Science, Architecture, Design, Real Estate, Environmental Studies, Business, and Public Health.

The candidate must be prepared to teach 2 introductory courses in Urban Studies to undergraduates, as required for the Urban Studies Minor. These will usually repeat each semester. The candidate will also offer additional elective courses for advanced undergraduates, usually one each semester, which may engage the candidate's specific intellectual concerns. Courses that connect students to community-based learning are especially welcome. Service for this position will require participation in conversations about building a multi-disciplinary urban studies curriculum with professors interested in developing the program.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, 9-month non-tenure track teaching position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor. Contracts are eligible for renewal for a second year. The teaching load is 3 courses per semester.

Qualifications:

While a PhD in Urban Studies is preferred, we will consider applicants in a closely related field. Applications from candidates whose preparation and research is in the Humanities, Social and Environmental Sciences, and the Design Arts are welcomed. It is expected that applicants show a record of teaching urban studies core courses in history, theory, and methods at the college level.

Application Instructions:

Applicants should submit all materials by April 1st to receive full consideration. All application materials must be submitted through Interfolio: apply.interfolio.com/102690.

Required materials include a cover letter describing qualifications and interest, a current CV, a teaching statement, and sample syllabi. Applicants should provide a link to an online portfolio of representative work in the field. In addition, please provide names and contact information for three professional references when you complete the online application.

Questions can be directed to Drs. Carol Reese and Vicki Mayer, Co-Directors of the Urban Studies Program (creese1@tulane.edu and vmayer@tulane.edu).
