Tenure-Track Assistant or Tenured Associate/Full Professor in Architectural Design (Design and Technology)

University of California Los Angeles

Requisition Number: JPF07136

The UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design invites applications for one full-time, open rank, tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Architectural Design. Anticipated start date is as early as July 1, 2022.

Recognized nationally and internationally, UCLA Architecture and Urban Design is well-known for its excellence in design, scholarship, and research. Degree programs in the department include a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies (B.A.), a professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch.I), a post-professional Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design (MSAUD), and a Master of Arts/Doctor of Philosophy in Architecture (M.A./Ph.D.) The three-year M.Arch.I curriculum, the largest program, prepares students for the practice of architecture by providing a focused framing of today's cultural, ecological, political and technological questions with a view to what architects may bring to bear on such complex issues. At each stage of the curriculum, AUD graduate students become equipped to not only lead the professional field but also to construct new opportunities by positioning their design imagination within a rapidly changing world. Our post-professional, MSAUD program is a ten-month research program that focuses on topics connecting architecture and urbanism with cutting edge technologies. In collaboration with innovative industry partnerships, this program is located at IDEAS, a satellite campus in Culver City.

As a leader within the public university, AUD is committed to advancing the discipline and the profession toward greater responsibility regarding environmental, civic, and spatial challenges. All programs in the department share values around architecture's agency to bring about greater equity, diversity, and inclusion, in order to build the world we want to live in.

The three-year M.Arch.I curriculum prepares students for the practice of architecture by providing a focused framing of today's cultural, ecological, political, and technological questions with a view to what architects may bring to bear on such complex issues. Our post-professional, MSAUD program is a ten-month research program that focuses on topics connecting architecture and urbanism with cutting edge technologies. This program, unconstrained by professional accreditation requirements, introduces students to real-world questions in collaboration with industry partners to expand the architect's role in shaping the future.

We seek candidates with expertise in one or more of the following subject areas:

  • Design practice, especially in areas of the profession strongly driven by emerging technologies of design and their influence on building systems and professional practice. Direct experience in professional practice with a growing knowledge of building assemblies, material performance, and construction processes and sequencing is also desirable and preferred in this subject area.
  • Design technologies, broadly interpreted, involving implications for design to a rapidly evolving technological landscape, pedagogical approaches unique to the teaching of design technology in the context of architectural education, theories of technology, and computation and/or digital fabrication. Knowledge of the politics and practices of new models for sustainable design in both practical and speculative forms is further required.
  • Design theory, research, and pedagogy, with emphasis on current applications to/implications for design practice.
  • We also welcome applicants whose focus lies in other subject areas of similar relevance to contemporary architectural scholarship and practice. Regardless of focus, all applicants must demonstrate a strong and ongoing contribution to the field, including a commitment to academic scholarship in the context of a major research university such as UCLA. A body of published work that indicates future promise is especially desired.

Candidate qualifications must include evidence of exceptional skill and pedagogical sophistication in architectural design studio teaching as well as in practice, research and/or creative work related to design. It is preferred that candidates have three years of university-level teaching experience with evidence of teaching in the realm of both theoretical and applied technology. We also seek candidates with at least three years of experience outside academia whose focus has been on professional practice within studios that focus on advanced forms of material research, fabrication, and installation, especially as regards sustainability.

We seek candidates with precisely articulated and focused interests, the ability to engage in the full breadth of the architecture curriculum, and demonstrable expertise that engages contemporary practice. Candidates with demonstrated administrative capacity are encouraged to apply and qualified candidates may be considered for a two-year renewable appointment as Director of Undergraduate Studies, a junior/senior year major awarding a B.A. in Architectural Studies.

A Master of Architecture degree or higher is a requirement for this position. Responsibilities will include teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, research, advising and service. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The workload is determined at the discretion of the Department Chair and requires a service commitment to the Department and the University as requested by the Chair.

The School of the Arts and Architecture is committed to building a more diverse faculty, staff, and student body in response to the changing population and educational needs of the City of Los Angeles, State of California, and the nation. The Department of Architecture and Urban Design values intellectual, cultural, and creative inquiry. Personal qualities such as originality and initiative are important assets that will contribute to a successful application. Applicants who would make meaningful and unique contributions to the intellectual and social interchanges within the profession are especially encouraged to apply.

UCLA welcomes and encourages diversity and seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the people of California, to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning. The department is seeking outstanding candidates with the potential for exceptional research, and excellence in teaching, and also a clear commitment to enhancing the diversity of the faculty, graduate student population, and of the majors in the School of Arts and Architecture.
