The School of Art, Design and Art History at James Madison University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor of Architectural Design. The program is a pre-professional degree, with strengths in design process, making, and navigation of the unknown. Students complete a BFA in Art, with a major in Architectural Design. We work to cultivate an architecture of experimentation, risk, rigor, phenomenology, and discovery. The times call for an architecture of healing and vision, a quest we embrace. Our students are open-minded, creative, and adventurous. Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach architectural design studios plus courses in history, theory, practice, representation, visualization and/or materials and methods of contemporary architectural design. These courses utilize skills ranging from research, hand-drawing, software proficiency, as well as digital and analog fabrication with a concentration on hybrid techniques. Dexterity with and knowledge of contemporary global issues/practices in design communication is essential. The position is a 10-month annual appointment in the Architectural Design program. In order to participate in our collaborative community, there is an expectation that the successful candidate will be on campus and available to students 4 days per week during the academic year and serve the program and school.


Required Qualifications: 

Candidates should minimally hold a graduate degree in architecture or equivalent international terminal degree in architecture.

Evidence of an active scholarly and/or innovative design practice with a focus on equitable global practices and design excellence.

Demonstrated commitment towards building an equitable, inclusive, and diverse scholarly environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

 Versatility with contemporary technology and architectural theory.

Teaching experience in design studio and other electives at the undergraduate level.

Capacity to advocate and collaborate with all students and faculty.

A genuine passion for student experiences above personal research or practice.

Versatile and adaptable in scheduling and teaching subject per each semester.

Ability to contribute to curriculum development.
