The University of Rochester Medical Center is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team as the Senior Space Planner (Healthcare/Clinical and/or Research/Laboratory). The Senior Space Planner  works with a highly skilled team to evaluate and coordinate the use of the Medical Center’s on and off campus clinical space resources in inpatient, ambulatory, and diagnostic & treatment facilities and related clinical support and/or on campus research and academic space resources.  The Senior Space Planner analyzes the effective utilization of space and the projection of future needs.

The Senior Space Planner’s primary responsibilities include:

Evaluates requests from the Senior Vice President of Health Affairs, Dean, Hospital Directors or Departments for renovation, relocation, expansion or improved use of existing space.  Prepares and contributes to program documentation.

  • Evaluates, tracks and resolves space requests.  Negotiates space agreements and coordinates transactions between departments based upon space metrics.  Direct interaction and negotiation with department leadership. 
  • Prepares reports, recommendations, planning programs or conceptual plans for approval by client/user requesting service and the Director.  In support of Space Committee decisions and Senior Administration requests; recommendations submitted to Planning and Project Management for implementation. 
  • Manages and coordinates the day-to-day updates for the University-wide space information system for the Medical Center.  Works closely with the Controller’s Office, Facilities, Information Technology Services and SMD Finance to continue to develop the Medical Center space information system.  Works with and advises administrators on processes and training for the Medical Center space survey.
  • Acts as liaison between client/user and the architects, contractors and Planning and Project Management or Real Estate Project Managers.  Manages small projects involving Health Affairs Division or other Senior Leadership of the Medical Center. Acts as liaison on projects to ensure adherence to original planning or acceptable alternatives. 
  • Coordinates the preparation of projections of Medical Center building needs based upon analyses of the department’s growth patterns and plans.  Assists the Director of Space Planning and appropriate others in the development and ongoing evaluation of a comprehensive integrated planning process.  Assumes responsibility for specific tasks including the collecting and analyzing of data, preparing narrative information and recording proceedings of meetings.
  • Assists in the creation, maintenance and communication of a facilities master plan in support of the strategic and programmatic plans of the Medical Center.
  • Coordinates the development of an assessment mechanism for measuring the efficiency of space utilization and recommends improvements in utilization of patient care space.
  • Develops and maintains space standards to be used in the process of space renovation, reassignment and construction.               

 Qualifications include but not limited to:

  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in Architecture, Facilities Planning, Interior Design, Finance or  Strategic Planning and 4-5 years relevant healthcare planning experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with FGI Guidelines for Design & Construction of Healthcare Facilities
  • Knowledge of Evidence-Based Design
  • Basic AutoCAD & intermediate Excel & PowerPoint
