The School of Architecture (College of Design) at the University of Minnesota seeks candidates for three positions in design.

  • One open rank position (tenure-track or tenure review-on-hire. Filling the role of Director of Undergraduate Studies is a goal of the search).
  • Two Tenure-Track Assistant Professorships (one of these positions will be part of a College of Design, Design Justice Cluster Hire)

The School of Architecture is committed to a diverse and socially engaged, contextually sensitive, ecologically responsible and technologically rich vision of design. Founded in 1913, SoA is known for its history of design excellence, its strong relationships with an exceptional practice community, and its integrated research centers and programs. The SoA is positioned to draw upon a culturally diverse community seized with the need for race and climate justice, through a curriculum that actively pursues engaged design, research, and scholarship in the College, University, and beyond.

Within this context, we seek candidates who bring exceptional, diverse, and critical voices to design studio instruction, who can contribute to our intellectual life, and who are ready to teach graduate and undergraduate design studios. In addition to excellence in design pedagogy, we seek demonstrated expertise in bridging research and design through architectural practices or related interdisciplinary design practice. We seek colleagues who understand the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration and who carry the commitment and energy to act on urgent, environment-shaping forces, both local and global.

Our primary selection criteria include excellence in the teaching of design studios supported by the strong promise of significant creative achievement in the field through design work, scholarship, research, professional practice, or a combination thereof. The ideal candidates will combine critical design intelligence with competence in a variety of digital and analog media as well as the ability to support and advance design pedagogy.

Diversity and inclusion are important criteria in enriching our employees’ experience and in supporting our academic mission. We are committed to attracting and retaining employees with varying identities and backgrounds and providing equal access to and opportunity in our programs.

Specific required qualifications include:

  • A Master of Architecture or equivalent professional degree.
  • At least two years of teaching experience in a design studio.
  • A record of peer-recognized examples of scholarship, research, and/or professional experience in design and areas related to design.

Desired qualifications include:

  • Professional registration.
  • Doctorate or PhD in Design or affiliated field.

Detailed position descriptions will be released in September.
