KieranTimberlake is currently seeking a Researcher - Building Performance to join our team. Our design practice includes over 85 professionals with diverse backgrounds and is recognized worldwide as a sustainable design leader. Responsibilities
 
The Researcher - Building Performance will be a member of KieranTimberlake’s Research Group and will work alongside peer-mentor Building Performance Specialists to advance the firm’s pursuit of high-performance building design. They will be responsible for applying their understanding of physical processes and environmental design principles to support architectural and research project teams, and their regular activities will encompass the following:

  • Preparing climate analyses to support early-phase conceptual design work
  • Conducting and interpreting daylight, energy, carbon, and life cycle analyses
  • Participating in technical-review sessions with peer-mentors in building performance
  • Synthesizing research findings in written and graphic form to help guide architectural teams
  • Extending research findings to make actionable design proposals
  • Reviewing technical literature in building performance modeling methods
  • Learning new tools, methods, and techniques building performance analysis
  • Collaborating on development of novel digital analysis tools
  • Supporting KieranTimberlake’s Sustainability Action Plan
  • Engaging in interdisciplinary brainstorming sessions and discussions with peer Research Group members across a wide range of topics, including ecology, environment, human health, post-occupancy evaluation, and many others

 
Qualifications
 
The ideal candidate is a thoughtful individual who wants to be part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary team and can demonstrate:

  • Strong written, verbal, and graphic communication skills
  • Strong quantitative reasoning ability
  • Eagerness to learn
  • Certification from or desire to receive certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC), International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), International Living Future Institute (ILFI), or similar
  • Proficiency with building- and urban scale modeling software: Rhino, Grasshopper, Energy modeling tools (EnergyPlus, ArchSim, or Honeybee), daylight modeling tools (DIVA or Ladybug)
  • Basic understanding of computation and programming principles, including basic knowledge of at least one of the following languages: C#, Javascript, Python, R

Candidates should also list relevant professional experience or coursework in any of the following areas:

  • Sustainable design principles
  • Urban- and building-scale climate analysis
  • Principles of building thermodynamics and building energy modeling
  • Daylight and comfort modeling
  • Building environmental control
  • Life cycle analysis/assessment
  • Statistics, data analysis, machine learning
  • Geospatial modeling (GIS)
