Bjarke Ingels Group’s Copenhagen Office is seeking a Computational Design Specialist within BIG IDEAS, which is the research and development division for all of BIG’s offices.

Role

The position will focus on informing the design process by quantifying the impact of potential architectural scenarios. This includes 1. modeling energy demand to compare passive design strategies, 2. estimating renewable energy production from wind turbines, PV arrays, hydrogen fuel cells, hydro-turbines, and heat pumps, as well as 3. evaluating energy storage options like batteries. The applicant will also be responsible for integrating the aforementioned analysis into larger systems, such as smart building management systems, smart cities, and Life Cycle Analysis frameworks. It will occasionally be necessary to model for compliance, but that is not the primary focus of this position. BIG IDEAS work hand-in-hand with design teams on more than half of BIG’s projects and collaborates closely with BIG’s in-house structural engineering department. We regularly engage throughout concept, schematic, and design development phases and occasionally continue through construction documentation. You will be part of a 10 -person ‘Computational Design’/’Sustainability’ team with expertise in climate analysis, LCA analysis, sustainability certification, geometry optimization, computational tool/software development, and robotic fabrication. We work almost exclusively with open-source tools and utilize a global research network.
 
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for providing design teams with the knowledge necessary to make informed design decisions. This role requires someone who can both visually communicate design concepts and offer technical insight into the expected performance of hypothetical design options. This role therefore requires keen interpersonal, interdisciplinary, and interdepartmental communication skills as well as a technical command over fundamentals of building science, climate data-based analysis, and the Rhino/Grasshopper software environment. You will also be part of our ongoing simulation tool / software development. Development takes place incrementally, as we customize our approach to each project and evolve our methods over the long-term.
 
Qualifications
Our ideal candidate has a master’s degree in architecture and/or engineering with 0-3 years of professional experience. Similarly, a passionate interest in designing data visualization related to energy concepts, strong representational skills, and expert knowledge of Rhino/Grasshopper, Excel, Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop are required. Professional experience in architecture such as design work on multiple design phases, knowledge of certification systems (DGNB, BREEAM, LEED, Well, etc.), and familiarity with energy-based regulations/laws/standards is highly valued. Academic knowledge of advances in energy research, simulation techniques, and material performance is also highly valued. Advanced energy modeling/Energy Plus is required, and further knowledge of other energy simulation software, GhPython, C# (or other scripting languages), daylighting simulation/Radiance are each a big plus, but not all required. We anticipate that you will be learning on the job, so most important is your ambition to develop authoritative knowledge on the above.
 
In short, you have a strong passion for architectural design incorporating and informed by energy modelling. You are a visionary holistic thinker that has the ability to discuss ideas freely in a creative environment. You are willing to challenge and develop the traditional design process and see computation as your media of exploration.
