Seeking Architects with Hawai'i ties

Dean Sakamoto Architects/SHADE is seeking to gather Hawai'i-born/raised talent who may be living and working away from the islands to help expand our mission-based practice. Full or part-time employment or contract-based engagement is possible. In-residence/in-person working is ideal, but virtual consulting may be a possibility. Our immediate objective is to build a team of hard-working designers and place-makers who truly understand our diverse cultural values, the spirit of Aloha and share a love of our land. DSA/SHADE is a full-service environmental design firm and charitable foundation. Dean Sakamoto Architects (DSA) was founded in 1999 and is known for its culturally specific, environmentally concerned design solutions in the Northeast U.S. and Hawai‘i. SHADE, which stands for Sustainable Humanitarian Architecture and Design for the Earth, is a collaborative practice with a focus on and network in the rapidly urbanizing tropical and subtropical Asia-Pacific regions. SHADE Institute, a non-profit subsidiary of SHADE, provides low-cost public interest planning and design services through its training and mentorship program.  

Job Profile

A minimum of 2-5 years of professional working experience since completion of a professional degree in architecture (M.Arch. or B.Arch.) for the Project Designer role. Project Architect applicants should hold a minimum of 5 years of experience. Professional licensure is preferred, however, State of Hawai‘i registration is not required. Primary responsibilities for both jobs include: project management; design drawings and specifications; direct supervision of project assistants. Secondary responsibility for one or more areas of office management/operations. Leadership capability a must; ability to be creative yet meet budgets and schedules; and possess a design sensibility which is compatible with the firm. Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite software and Excel is required. Excellent verbal, written communication skills along with energetic, assertive and proactive personality traits are desired. Candidates who demonstrate successful prior project outcomes of design excellence in the application materials will receive priority consideration. Compensation will be based on experience and may be adjusted according to performance (3 month post-hire evaluation period).  

Experience and/or interest in applying sustainable and humanitarian-design certification programs such as LEED, Living Building Challenge, SEED, and etc. is ideal.
