Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, a design practice with offices in Virginia, Houston and New York is seeking an experienced Graphic Designer for the Charlottesville office. At least three (3) years’ experience is desired.  We are committed to design excellence in the creation of landscapes that are sustainable and honor ecological and cultural contexts of place. The broad knowledge base and diverse backgrounds of our staff contributes greatly to the firm’s ability to work on a diverse range of projects and to respond effectively to individual client needs.

We are seeking a Graphic Designer to join our team.

The Graphic/ Web Designer will create and/or edit images, copy, audio-visual components, and other material for web and print distribution; assist in creating interactive website elements; organize and maintain digital files and images; and create and post new material to NBW’s existing website. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are required. Interest or experience in landscape architecture or architecture would be beneficial to the position.  An initial goal for the Graphic Designer is to participate in the completion of a monograph of the firm’s design work to be published 2022.  This position can be located in either Charlottesville, VA or New York, NY.

The person in this position will contribute to most every aspect of the department’s production. Graphic and writing and editing skills are crucial for participating and contributing to processes. Broadly, the Junior Graphic Designer would:

  • Substantially contribute to upcoming publications, especially a new firm monograph
  • Assist the team with graphic layouts for RFQ and RFP production tasks. For this a thorough understanding of the firm’s mission, design process, values, visual assets, and experience will be crucial
  • Contribute to publications on the firm’s work – from curation of images to graphic design
  • Contribute to firm projects especially planning and research documents
  • Contribute to web and social media tasks
  • Participate in the production and commissioning of video work
  • Organize and maintain digital files and images
  • Assist in the strategizing and production of project material from logos and wayfinding to interpretive and narrative strategies

Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and a proven interest or experience in landscape architecture, architecture, design or science communication. Ability and appetite to prioritize deadlines and keep connected to the production team – often consisting of designers and communication staff – will be key.


  • At least 3 years of applicable experience
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, MS Office Suite, and website development tools, Rhino experience would be a plus
  • Working knowledge of 3-D modeling programs Rhino or SketchUp and associated plug-ins
  • Rigorous attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize and meet concurrent deadlines
  • Remain up-to-date with graphic design practices and software
  • Some digital photography and videography experience desired
  • CAD, 3-D modeling or GIS software knowledge a plus 
  • Interest in Data Visualization

Education Requirements:

Undergraduate or graduate graphic design or related degree or equivalent experience.
